Thanks Peter, appreciate that.

The bag I have, the one I reviewed at the top of the thread, has an egg
that's no removable, do others have ones you need to place in yourself or is p*****g another egg the best way?

If yours is the same as mine, there's a hole at the top corner, secured with velcro.

I have a number of bouncy balls shaped like eggs. They're quite realistic.

I have one in the egg bag, and a stunt double that appears as a final chop cup load and serves to segue into Bish Bash Bosh. I then comment about how fortunate it was that I didn't break it and 'accidentally' drop it on the floor, allowing it to bounce around the room.

Where appropriate, I sell these bouncy eggs in back of room stalls - I can't get away with that at private birthday parties, but I'm always on the lookout for opportunities to work public events. :)

Ah, then mine is different from yours then. Without exposing, shall we say it's "self contained" and no sleights are really needed other than some fake extractions.

Nope, sounds like it's exactly the same, except mine offers the means to change the egg. :)

The Egg Bag

Postby Allen Tipton » Dec 5th, '07, 11:20

:D There is The Egg Bag Book by John Novak( also a dvd based on it) which cover the history of the Egg Bag and shows a number of famous ones( with illustrations) of The Sterling, the Mardo, The Charlie Miller, Malini & High Pocket E B's. All this with lists of EB's, moves, ploys, sneaky things, notable performers, videos, seamstresses. That is if you want to learn all about the EB.
2. There is a good 'Know How', published by Supreme. authored by Will Ayling. This contains the Dante, Malini, Ken B, Bamberg etc routines and/or bags.

3. For Me. The inexpensive Ali Ben Ali book, 'Down Your Alley' ( which contains a number of entertaining, all proved in performance, routines)published by Russell Hall of Magick Enterprises contains the best comedy routine suitable for children or adults. My own is based on this. The actual bag which is different, easy, no fumbling complete with just this routine is also obtainable from Russ.

My only concern as I told him was that is the usual standard black, which is totally the wrong colour, particularly in the days when all magicians wore black tails or DJ's. Black against black. Russ said it was because the slightly stiff material for the bag was only made in black.
At least others since have made EB's in different colours.

The Tarbell one is made in red plaid. Others too have finally used some colour.

Although one does not draw attention to the bag, it is the egg that is the focal point, it is better for an audience to see all the apparatus.

I have had mine, the Ali Ben Ali'/Len Belcher type, made in Maroon. My first Egg bag came from Woolworths in 1944. made by Ellisdons , it was bright red and this young conjuror had to carry a real egg( wartime) round wrapped in cotton wool. Geoff Maltby at Repro also made me one up in bright red. Alas with the passing years maroon becomes me more.

The Len Belcher excellent routine, using a boy & a girl was published in Abra Vol. 66 No. 1700 Saturday, 26th. Aiugust 1978( you see Abra detractors there is good materail to be found there!! sorry about the dig! No I'm not really.)

Len's Bag is different to others and I believe that Ali Ben Ali (Brian McLernon who died far too young. I would dearly loved to have met him. His humour is great.) based his on this model as indeed I have.
Anyone who wants a copy of this routine can PM me with your e mail & I'll send you one.

Roy Baker also had a deep mauve EB, with zipper bottom, on sale with a simple, professional routine

Wow! Thanks Allen, that's a great help. Some things for me to start tracking down.
Is the Egg Bag book still in print? I would be very interested in getting hold of that. It sounds like it would cover all you need.

Not seen that, will look out for it. Cheers mate.

I spotted the 'Egg Bag Book' for just £3.00 in the Davenports catalogue.
Does this sound like the same one, Allen?

The Egg Bag

:D No Freddie, the book in Davenport's is one of the Magic City small books which are a help to anyone starting out who wants to look up details of which ever trick/subject the Magic City book deals with.
There were 20 books by Leo Behnke in the original series, ranging from Zombie, Cups & Balls, Linking Rings, to Wands, Reels, Trick decks etc.
He did add Thread reference to the series later and this is a great intro to IT.

The Egg Bag

Postby Allen Tipton » Dec 6th, '07, 14:12

:D Russellmagic. Of course it will be superb in Jeff Hobson's hands!
What it would be like in anothers????

You do not need an expensive bag just a good routine & this is developed by you over a period of time, thought, planning, research, rehearsal and performance; cutting, changing, trying out etc.

That way you end up with a routine which is
a. Yours.
b. Works for you and your type of audiences & venues.

THE CLASSICS: It is the same with ALL the great Classic effects from Cups & Balls, to Linking Rings, to C & R Rope etc. All very simple methods and effects. What is not simple is the routine. And that as I said above comes with planning, thought, time, rehearsal & tryout.
The only Rule with The Classics all magicians need to remember is:
The effect is straightforward and simple. DO NOT complicate it in your routine.

Note: we have all got lost seeing a ( & once it was) 12 minute routine with the Cups & Balls, complicated beyond belief with many, many, very clever moves & handling; appreciated perhaps by magicians but by no one else! Then, after 3 or 4 minutes we cannot remember whether there are 3 balls, or 33 or what & how many balls are under which cup or whether there are still 3 cups?????????

Egg Bag

Postby Allen Tipton » Dec 6th, '07, 20:29

:D Thank you Freddie. I have never been in the Art for rewards just a great passionate love of Magic & great concern of it being presented properly.
As a teenage magician in the Staffs Magic Society I was so well supported and looked after as were Don Bevan, Christopher Woodward & Leslie Melville I was determinded to do the same for others as i grew older.
PS. I have always read a lot.

In Alicadabras early lectures( Lecture booklet No. 1 he has a great idea for the Egg Bag for children using a red ball which first appears on his nose. it changes to yellow during the routine and ends up as a spotted ball.
When I first booked Paul he did this, combining lectures 1 & 2 and it was a little riot.

It's great, all these ideas are giving me inspiration to come up with my own routine. Although the egg bag appears to be a simple device, iy's actualy more versatile than it seems.

Thanks again Allen, your knowledge and help are much appreciated.

I think the jeff hobson bag is expensive due to the props, the bag is meant to be superb material and the eggs are meant to be fantastic. I was looking at getting a malini egg bag but now i am not sure as hear others have problems with them. I'd rather get a cheaper bag that is ideal and construct a very funny routine than to spend loads. thanks
