I say there should be an place where people can ask the wp (and i know we have a few) how to start up. And I dont mean go to the local resturant. I mean what forms do i need, Insurances and the likes. i reckon this is an ace idea beacause its mie.

Good idea. The legal side of stage hypnosis in the UK is a complicated minefield though...

One of the best and coincidentally the cheapest way to get insurance is to join Equity.

You annual membership (different scales apply depending on earnings but starts at £90 per annum) gets you 12 months public liability of up to £1m which is plenty for nearly all situations. Go to a broker and you'll be looking at £280 per annum to start and being a member of equity makes you sound a little better when you're marketing yourself.

good idea

I have found that public liability insurance (although not a legal requirement) not only gives you peace of mind but is a good selling point when touting for work and if you are bringing your PA equipment into some venues, a must. I only paid about £80 for mine up to £5million cover. I have also recently employed the services of a chartered accountant to sort out my mess, I mean my taxes. My company is a limited company that has been trading for over a year now so she got her work cut out, Good idea for a topic about this offering advice and for us to share good practice.

Equity won't insure stage hypnotists, I believe...

But surely Freddie, as a hypnotist, can't you 'suggest' to them that they do insure you

This is true. For stage hypnosis cover you need to join the Academy of Hypnotic Arts. Or so I believe.

I wonder if a way around this would be to not call it "hypnosis"? If you were to market your act as "mind magic & suggestion techniques"? Just a thought. When I dabble in this area in a close up environment I call it a "deep state of relaxation that allows the intuitive psyche to come to the fore."

Just avoid the H word I say.

I find with the layman, the 'H' word is quite a powerful one and has an effect on people in itself. (I'm sure a few people here will know what I'm getting at)

It's such a dodgy area and with this country becoming rapidly like the US where people sue each other for anything, you have to be careful.

I have made many queries with insurers and none of them touch stage hypnosis and for public shows you really do need it. The law, I believe, is different for private performances.

There are actually quite a few previous threads of the business side of things but a fair amount of searching is required. One of the threads is at http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic1989.php and the words 'business' or 'commercial' tend to return a few useful posts.

But overall wouldn't a business forum be better so as to put all the enquiries etc in one place?

E.g. threads about invoices, payment method, contracts, insurance rather than all over the forum.

As with all suggestions re new rooms or areas, we have to be sure that it would be used regularly to justify taking up space. We never rule out such suggestions so it might come to pass at some point.
