Best Cup and Ball routines

Postby bananafish » Tue Dec 09, 2003 1:08 pm

Ive just been watching some of the amazing movie clips at the seemagic site that Beer4Dolphins mentioned in another post. (Nice one Beer).

One of them was a most amazing Cup and Ball Routine. It was by Tim Ellis, and takes place in a cafe/milk shake parlour setting and is wonderfully choreographed to sixties rock and roll music.

Ive seen some very good classic chop cup routines, and Ive seen some slightly different ones that were extremely good (David Regal does a great routine with a mouse), but for me - this would win my award for the most innovative Cup and Ball routine I have seen so far.

Are there any other contenders?

Aldo Colombini's FISM winning routine *from '76, I think) is incredible. While he feels it isn't really for laymen, I disagree and have used it with tremendous success in the past. I'm not talking the Mama Mia routine her. This is the one that appears on one of his A-1 videos and was written up as one of the Lewis Ganson Teach-In Series published by Supreme in your very own homeland.

Still the best single routine I've ever seen!

I'll have to see if the Ipswich Magical Society have Aldo Colombini's A-1 Videos in their library, as I'd like to see that now.

The reason I found Tim Ellis's milk shake routine so good though, was how wonderfully everything was timed just right with the music. It's one thing concentrating on patter AND the magic without also timing it all down to the last second.

Very impressive.

Just seen the Tim Ellis Version, and it's a really nice twist on it. Cleverness, with the sunglasses and that, But for just straight cups and balls, i like the michael ammar routine, the third ball on the cup. Pure mis-direction - the guy is a genius.

Cups and Balls

Postby S_adamson1 » Tue Mar 08, 2005 3:04 pm

Its a classic I have seen many versions of this effect performed but one version that I especially like it the one featured on Michael Ammars lecture at the magic Castle DVD. The routine is not taught on this DVD but can be found and purchased from his web site www.ammarmagic.com

i recently like very much the simple and short routine of the penguinmagic ( a fast condensation of the classic dai vernon routine) and also the routines of carl andrews ( the one taught in table hopping cups&balls, whith 2 cups and the one with the FULL tomato box ... awesome!!)

I have the Carl Andrews table hopping cups and balls and it's a very nhice routine in my opinion. It goes down well everytime and you'll always get requests for a repeat if you perform it well.

Just beware that I thought that the teaching was quite poor although it's easy to pick up as long as you don't mind watching over an over again and again.

Tim Ellis, Cups and Balls

Postby Michael Sullivan » Tue Apr 18, 2006 9:17 pm

G'day Guys,

Tim Ellis has been my Mentor Since I got into Magic 6 years ago and I have seen the routine many times live and will enjoy seeing it many times more.

I have talked to him about how the routine came about and all the inns and outs.

The routine is a lesson in creativity and skill.

The routine is now on DVD for you to learn yourself and the history of the routine and how it was created to fit the timing of the music is also on the DVD.

I like Carl Andrews' 2 cup routine but I think John Mendoza's 3 cup routine is the best I've seen. As for the Chop Cup I would have to say Don Alan :)

For a chop cup the simplicity is the key, imo. I prefer Don Alan's routine, there are no fancy moves, everything is quick and straight to the point. And it's soooo strong.
