Smokey Magic - Trevor Duffy

Postby lozey » Mar 11th, '08, 21:53

Cost - was £39 at Blackpool, various prices at online magic shops
Difficulty 2/5
Effect - Produce white smoke from your hands at any point in any routine

My review:
I bought this at Blackpool and am very pleased with it. You get a gimmick that is very comfortable to wear and is completely adjustable to any size. You will also need a couple of household chemicals, so it is NOT for under 18s! I had a hard time finding these in the UK, but eventually I got them off the internet (they are very cheap!). You need to wear a jacket or sweatshirt to use this gimmick (Note to Youtube generation - NOT a teeshirt :D)

PROS
Cheap refils
Not corrosive (unlike Ultrasmoke 2000)
Creates smoke for hours between refils
Can pull the sleeves up after producing the smoke, gimmick is not visible
Can be used in hundreds of effects, vanishes, tranformations, appearences ect

CONS
The instructions would be greatly improved with diagrams, I had to ask Trevor to show me how to set this up (which he did kindly)

Is designed for regular use (ie. table hopping ect). If you dont use it regularly during a night, there is a chance that the gimmick can get blocked up (although it hasnt happened to me)

A point worth noting about this (good and bad) is that this is a kind of 'limited only by your imagination' effect. It does NOT include any routines of any kind. Because of this, it will not suit everybody!

I'd give this 9/10, its a fantastic bit of kit

Is the actual mechanism on a pull of some sort?

Also, does it make any noise?

Thanks

There is no pull involved

It makes no noise at all

Lozey showed this to us on saturday and it's one of the best smoke production items I've seen. Very simple, and best of all - very cheap! No expensive canisters to replace. Seemed easy to use too, I didn't see any smoke leaking out when she didn't want it to which seems to be a constant problem for Ultrasmoke etc.

My one reservation is that despite the fact that Trevor says it's none-corrosive, it uses some pretty strong cleaning chemicals. These probably neutralise each other in the reaction, and indeed there was no marking or staining on Lauren's arm when we had a look, but I just wonder if it truly has no effect on clothing over a longer period of time... I'm sure you'll keep us up to date Lozey!

I also bought this at Blackpool due mainly to the price when compared with the untrasmoke 2000.

Before I bought I had a chat with James More about this product as I noted that James uses this in his Youtube video for a nice production of a mobile phone and he highly recommends it.

If you can find a decent local hardware store in yellow pages then you can buy the two chemicals required for around £3.50 and you'll get enough to last you for years - and yes, I do mean years unless you become a 'chain smoker'

This doesn't take much practice and it's just a matter of a little co-ordination to produce the puff of smoke at 'just' the right moment and make it look natural (without stopping what your hands are doing  ).

Overall, this is a well made product in my opinion and worth the money if you're interested in this type of thing. How often I will use it is another matter

Can someone comment on the smell of the smoke ?
is it acrid or chemically ?

It's not actually smoke that's produced.

The chemicals react to produce an extremely fine powder which looks just like smoke. There's no smell as you're not exactly going to be 'squirting' this into people's faces, including your own.

Performed at arms length (where it's designed to be used) you'll have no problems.

Would this powder have the tendency to show up or accumulate on darkly colored close-up mats or tablecloths?

Not really sure but the quantity is so small that it shouldn't be a problem. I've used it wearing a black jacket without any noticeable signs but that's in walkaround situations where you're on the move and you're gone while it still hangs in the air.

From the limited choice on the market I think that this one offers the best value for money and hopefully you will be happy with your purchase.

I don't know how you can say Smokey magic is non-corrosive while UltraSmoke is not. They use the exact same chemicals. The corrosiveness would depend on the molarity of the two chemicals you are using, and both products are merely delivery systems.
