The loss of a true Movie Magician

Postby Tom Lauten » Jun 17th, '08, 13:38

It is a sad day.

Stan Winston, head of Stan Winston Studios has just died at the age of 62 after a 7 year battle with cancer.

He wasn't a conjourer but I personally think he was his own type of magician, a special effects artist and creative team leader of his special effects studio a man whos choice of career I share.

Stan and his talented crews brought us wonderful creations for projects such as the Aliens films, The terminator films, The Jurassic Park films and too many more to mention...look him up, marvel at the empire of talent he put together. Spare him and his family a thought.

Hollywood's magic has just dimmed that little bit, unhappy day...

If we can hit that bullseye then the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards... Checkmate!

I read that news on Teletext this morning - only 62 and now gone. Stan's input to the blockbuster movies over the past 20 years or so are incredible. My favourite quote was when he first saw the CGI dinosaurs for Jurassic Park his comment was, 'Well, there goes my career!' In typical Winston spirit he just adapted to new technology and became a master of it as much as the more traditional models made with wires and skin type FX.
