The Cheapskate mentalist..

Postby IAIN » Aug 3rd, '08, 10:53

this is for those of you who are just starting out in mentalism...

http://www.mreenterprises.co.uk/showcategory.php?id=21

now, why this site? mainly, because eddie burke has been around for 40-50 years in magic and mentalism...and secondly, he's great value, old fashioned customer service, and the effects are old school and wonderful..

you may find some effects elsewhere, but you always get his presentations and ploys too...

if we subtract 13 steps and Practical Mental Effects/Magic out of it - which will cost you = £36..here's my list for those of you who may be interested..I'm sure others may recommend others..please do...

NOTE! these contain no dvds, nor downloads...and you may want to re-make some of the cards you get to suit you...

AL KORAN'S MEDALLION - £10
BILLET INDEX - £6
BLACK BALLED - £8
FORCE BAG - £6
COLOUR PERSONALITY - £6
EQUIVOQUE AND PATEO - £10
FORCING FAVOURITES - £5
JUST 3 CHANCES - £8
MENTAL BOARD - £8.50
SPIKED NEWS - £8
SWAMI & BOOK - £5.50
TRIPLE PREDICTION - £8
ZENNER MIRACLE MATCH - £8.50

all of the above will cover pretty much all the basics to get you started, and i mean absolute basics of mentalism...all for under a hundred quid..

and with those, you'll be able to see how things work, learn some old principles and techniques, as well as gaining some cheeky little skills along the way..equivoque and pateo are very useful indeed...

think of these as a primer, before going onto the "big boy" lists...

Excellent suggetion, IAIN.

Classics of mentalism at a bargain price. Just for anyone who doesn't know Eddie, he does sell DVDs and items from other performers, but much of his stock comprises his own booklets and packaged effects.

I'm glad you said that mate, i've already had a pm from someone saying they've ordered everything!

eddie - if you're reading this...do i get commission? :D

i know you can get all the osterlind easy to master dvds for roughly the same price, but i though it was important to get a little of the history behind each effect, and handle to things needed first hand and try them out...

the ones i picked are fairly cheap, and great for practicing...i always buy from eddie before i decide to upgrade...

that board i said to get, its not the best in the world, but it'll give you a good idea of how to handle a board, what to use and when and audience management too..all for eight quid...

then you can splash out on a tommy pad or a riggs device...

Absolutely. Also, I have noticed that, for some effects or DVDs that are available from other dealers, Eddie often offers them at the best price. The Mental Board is one such item. It's selling for £9-11 elsewhere. Not much of a difference, but every little helps when you're buying!

brilliant tip there Iain! Just as a side, I saw a couple of trick ages ago that really interested me but forgot the name of them and where I'd seen them. Just had a look at that link and it's on that site, I'll be putting an order in soon.

Good find, my eye was caught at Cheapskate mentalism and that describes me in a nutshell so...

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

There will soon be a biographic overview on Eddie in On-Line VISIONS... I'm not certain when it's scheduled to come out... December I believe.

I forgot to mention... Eddie just had some surgery so if he don't get back to you right away, be patient. He's as honest as the day is long and he will take care of you.

I came accross his site a good few years ago, and it always stuck in my mind because I was amazed to find that he lives 5 minutes away from where I do (I dont really live in a 'hotbed' of magic!).

Damn! I have been holding myself back recently from buying magic and just working with what I have. But I just couldn't resist the Black Balled (an effect I have wanted for ages) and a few more items.

don't forget for those starting off - take the principle you learn with each effect, and apply it to something different...make your own presentations from the basics and classics...

Great thread, you old perv! I've been looking for a decent zodiac/horoscope effect and Eddie seems to have a few. Any recommendations?
