I had the exact same problem couple of times while practising this trick (its a cheap brass version: £13.00 if I remember correctly). As Replicant mentioned, you need to have it very slightly tilted; instead of having my hand straight vertical, I have it a bit tilted as well (very little tilt; perhaps 5 to 10 degree). Depending on the spectators angle, I may even have my pinky underneath just in case the coin dropping prematurely.

another way I have tried is to tilt it towards them, as if I am giving a spectator a better view of the coins.
