I can kind of see both sides of the coin here, (kind of lol)

I have a question of my own

slightly off topic here, but where do you guys stand on this kind of situation-

I have had IAF now for over a year, and perform it alot, the deck is now in real need of replacement its looking very shabby and nas seen better days. obviously i have paid my dues to the creator, what would you do, buy a new IAF deck or try and make one?

Once again we seem to have an unnecessary conflict situation so can we all just count to ten before hitting the submit button? TM policy is quite clear, we don’t support exposure or copying but there are always going to be grey areas where it's up to the individual conscience as to the right course of action.

I did it, the original deck, was so worn down, with so many cards missing (signed and given out) i figure i HAD paid my money to the creator, and seeing as im not selling the thing on for profit, i made two more decks.. simple as.

i had bought an original, and it wore down, im NOT, no matter what anyone says, going to fork out another £18 for a replacement, and then end up with extra copies of the DVD etc, and still have to buy FP on top of that... when i can do it for less than £1.50, plus about 20-30mins work, plus flash paper...

Im not intending on starting a discussion, with my above post, just letting Rvoice, that its 'up to him', and shouldn't be influenced buy seemingly rich peoples views!

I believe that its what ever YOU rather do... Me, i like making things and I'm in a really really bad money situation, so i prefer to make it myself so i can save the money, have fun, and make sure that what i get in the end is something that I really like because i can customize it to my likings.
You have already paid for the trick once and you know how to do it, so technically all you would be doing is paying $25 dollars (again) but this time it's just for a deck of cards that you could make yourself for $1.50.
However, that doesnt mean that some people wouldn't buy it. Some aren't very crafty or are lazy or don't have much free time so they would much rather pay the $25 just to save themselves the all the 'time and trouble' of having to make it themselves. IMO, You've paid your "dues to the creator" that everyone's always whining about so i think that in your situation, it's all left up to your personal preference (and artistic talent, hehe  ) If you do decide to make your own....feel free to PM me if you would like some tips or need any help~ =)

I've had In A Flash for a while now and it's served me really well, seems to be the trick people talk about the most (probably because of the fire aspect and they way it finishes with burnt cards) however i've really gone off it because of a bad experience i had with it a while ago.
Basically i didnt perform it too well and felt really stupid afterwards so changed my closer completely.
After giving it a rest for a couple of months, i think im gonna bring it back into my set this weekend....It's a really strong trick.

Tyler.

Hi guys,

Well I finally bought this - and I'm very impressed with the cards. For those who bought their IAF a while ago, the cards now come with a more realistic burnt hole - rather than a perfect circle. That leaves me with a big problem though - how do I make replacements - it is a very random burnt-squiggle shape!

Second question - this is my first effect using flash paper, and being quite new to me I'm being quite cautious with it (keeping it in a tin and only drying out one sheet at a time). I been using a size similar to that what Jay uses - but I’ve been surprised at the huge amount of flame that comes off it!

I've been practicing in my dining room over a wooden tray. The first 3 attempts were fine - but the last attempt burnt my fingers holding the deck (I tried to keep them as low as possible) and the shock made me drop the cards! - which wouldn't look good at a gig!

Any tips for holding the deck? Or lighting the flash paper too? (I wondered if there was a nack to lighting it at one side to allow burn in the correct direction??) As a potential solution I've just tried to hold my palm flat, but the cards can slide about a bit - which wouldn't help - and if the coin doesn't fully drop, you can't then shake the deck like Jay tells you too!

Cheers Guys,

Regards,

Most flash paper comes semi-wet, although you can't always tell, it just feels kind of cool. If you light it when it hasn't thoroughly dried out, it will burn slightly slower and there will be more time for pieces to fall off or for it to slide around! So make sure it's really dry! Otherwise, use a smaller piece - I use flash pad size and that always seems plenty!

I'd like to ask if anyone has successfully followed his advice with the earlier decks (or replacement home-made decks) and charred the edges with a lighter? I'd really like to do this but I know it will warp the card slightly - I would like to know if jamming it in a deck then into a card guard etc. or under some books is enough to re-flatten the card? I'm on home made replacements now and really don't want to waste half a deck and loads of time by charring the edges only to be left with an unusable deck!

I cut my own replacements, and then circle the inside edges with black marker....this gives the slight impression that they are burnt as well

As long as you work on getting everything lined up right, and one is available, there is nothing wrong with putting the deck on a table before you light it.

I've never done this with mine, I've found that the more it's used then the more charred and authentic it starts to look - I do, however, have to replace the cards at which the coin stops each time - if I've not given it out, then there's quite often a strange dark mark on the back of just one card in the deck...

Insert Harry Potter jokes here...

You can buy a deck(bikes) with a hole in thats just bigger than a 2p, so I use 10ps for the trick.

You then end up with plenty of spares and no fiddling cutting your own!!

They cost about £5-8 I think, from kaymar magic in nuneaton. They are not listed on his site but he does sell them.

As for holding the pack it's just confidence, once you have done this a few times you become accustomed to the flame and how it behaves.

I must admit I get a bit too confident at times as it is very tempting to get too close to them!!

Gimmick

Postby TheLondonI » Mar 26th, '07, 21:16

I don't feel my handmade gimmick for 'in a flash' was anywhere near as convincing as the one that you get when you buy it. But then again you can specialise your gimmick to your needs.

Personally, I don't feel there's anything wrong at all with replacing your exhausted gaff deck with a home-made one. You've paid the originator for the costs of the supplied gaff, but mainly the secret & DVD (if applicable).

It's like anything - if it breaks or gets damaged, you have 3 options:

- Bin it, and buy another
- Repair it
- Make your own

I've made my own replacement deck (from a single deck, which looks much more natural than the one originally-supplied, where you can see a distinct difference between the gaffs), and I'm more than happy with it.

In response to a previous query, posted on this thread, I've also scorched about half of the holed cards in my new deck. Although this *does* cause some warping initially, it settles down very quickly with the use of a card-guard, and makes the 'holed' section look wonderful (you actually get scorch-marks spreading onto the faces/backs), and is well-worth the extra-effort. :D
