I work with this all the time, its the first card trick I do and it gives the perfect reason to bring out another pack as you have just ruined the first one.

No need for switches, its perfectly reasonable to carry on with a new pack!

This trick is very good and gets brilliant reactions, anyone who says anything else either does not have it or has never worked properly!!

I look for tricks just like this, card to mouth, pocket, under glass, ACR etc are fine tricks, but flames and burnt cards sticks in their minds. When your at a table for no more than 10 minutes you have to hit them with good visual rememberable stuff, this is one such item.

just for the hell of it here is my 2004 review

The Effect

A card is chosen by a spectator and then cut into the middle of the deck where it is lost. A coin is introduced and inspected and is then wrapped in a small piece of tissue paper. The cards are given one final cut and the wrapped coin is placed on top of the deck of cards. Using a "Magical" lighter you ignite the tissue paper which disintegrates 'In a Flash'. When the eyes refocus it seems the coin has burnt thru the deck of cards. The cards are removed to reveal a hole burnt through the centre of them while the coin rests on the remainder. The coin is taken off the top card and the top card is turned over..... it is the spectators chosen card!!!

Cost

$21.95 US

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

3, but honestly this is an easy 3.

Review

This is my second favourite trick that I acquired for christmas (my favourite is Paperclipped, check out my review).

Can you hold a pinkie break? Then you can perform this effect. It is very simple to perform, the first cut puts the card exactly where you want it. The misdirection from revealing the secret comes in folding the tissue round the coin and getting your spectator to hold the coin parcel. This allows you to cut the deck again take the parcel back and place in situ before placing the cards back on the table.

That's it then, all that remains for you to do is to be theatrical, concoct a story, even get the spectator to ignite the paper at the corner. whichever way you choose to get the paper ignited once it has been lit and the glare of light has faded there will be an intake of breath as they realise that the coin has burnt thru the cards right in front of their very eyes.

Overall

10 out of 10 and deservedly so. This is strong visual magic with a nice application for FP. The premise of this effect has got me thinking of other ways to utilise it. I like it, I use it a lot and my only gripe is that for a trick entitled In A Flash you get no FP included. You MUST buy FP SEPARATELY.

The instructions are clear and concise as is the packaging. A sealy bag not much bigger than the pack of cards contains the instructions on folded A4 paper and the deck itself.

I'm a great fan of Jay Sankey and I must admit that In A Flash in one of his best ones yet.
Had great reactions from this and the added flash paper part nail the trick perfectly.
Keep them coming Jay... :D :D

I'm not a great lover of Sankey tricks to be honest but this one is great.

It's a keeper.

One of the most regular things I hear is "Can you show my friends the one with the fire??".

I reckon it'll keep going for a long time yet.

I've acquired many marketed effects over the years, and whilst Jay Sankey's In A Flash was one of those initial high priority effects I swooned over in the early "learning" days of being a sleight and flourish obsessive, it gradually worked its way down the manageable list.

However, in a sudden reversal of fortune, I got this as a bona fide bargain on eBay! Plus postage, of course. Whilst waiting for it to arrive I thought up a premise for the effect, and having roadtested it for laypeople this weekend I'm really pleased with my presentation of it, as well as the reactions. Being a keen advocate of sleight of hand, I am disappointed that it takes a flash of fire for spectators to really stand up and take note (though I hasten to add that most of my presented effects get amazing reactions, hee hee), compared to less conventional card effects.

Firstly, I strive to make my presentation as original as possible, and in an utterly charming fashion I ask the spectator to breathe hot air onto the deck with their card somewhere within. I then explain that most magicians would at this stage do an effect and reveal their card, but to cheat, I'm going to turn their coin into a heat seeking missile. However, as missiles are volatile and prone to explosions I wrap it up in cotton wool, or this tissue paper to prevent... ah.. you know the rest.

I really love this!

At the risk of sounding like a Penguin Magic reviewer, you should - unequivocally - add this to cart!!

Incidentally, I've noted that Cards for Magic are now selling decks that have a centre hole bored out.

Bought with a regular deck you could make up two decks or In a Flash for a reasonable price.

Why bother...a razor knife and about 15minutes and I make my own...I actually give them away as souvenirs often!
