It's fairly simple for an Admin to add alternative styles for people to choose from while keeping the current look as the default. The problem is that if the forum has any mods, add-ons or tweaks to how it performs then they have to be added to each style individually, which can be a bit of a pain in the wink-wonk for whoever is lumbered with the code modding.
I kind of like Talk Magic to be in the SubSilver default style, since it's a very down-to-brass-tacks forum. It's about content not flashy graphics.
