Real names vs nicknames

Postby John McDonald » Feb 7th, '04, 16:28

This could prove to be an interesting debate and I am interested in people's views. Should everyone post under their real name or continue to use nicknames such as "nicknamethegreat." One of the very exciting things about TalkMagic is that there are a lot of professional magicians who post on this messageboard and knowing who you are talking to can really generate a community spirit. Just a thought? Any ideas?

PS One of the most exciting things about the Genii forum is precisely that people post under their own names.

Best

"theamazingone" :wink:

What if we put our real names in with the location bit or something like that, or have a bit on the register form that says 'real name'?

just a thought :wink:

I do agree with boywonder, real names can be put in profiles, also I think maybe showing your real name in the list of members would be useful as members could scan or search to see if there are any magis they know? or maybe have a seperate list of all the working pros real names/stage names? just a thought also im gunna go start a new topic on creating stage names, as i need one.....

We allow people to choose any name they like as some people prefer not to be recognised, I would suggest that people include their full names in their introduction if they want to use a pseudonym, but we can't really force people to. To start with very few people used their actual names, now far more people seem to. Pretty much everyone who visits the board and is a 'name' in the magic world seems to go under their own name though, and those are the important ones really.

I wouldn't mind if you called me mistress of magic or Lynz, well, Lynsey I suppose would be my real name but I'm only usually called Lynsey by a)my mum when in trouble or b) by some teachers/relatives.
I'm pretty sure my name's in my introduction, not sure though. I don't really mind, some people may not like the idea of their name and location being on veiw to the world, just depends I suppose. Nicknames often give some information about the person, like what type of magic they're into, whereas real names let you know exactly who you are talking to. I agree with what's been said about having real names in the list of members, but we really can't force people to reveal their real names if they don't want to.

If you really like you can call me Edward. My friends don't call me Jing, i just used that because I thought it sounded alright for the website. My friends have many nicknames for me, (and no you can't call me Kid Rock)

It's Ed, Jing or Mr. Jing, to all of you...

Some of this may be a throwback to The Old Forum days - a lot of folks there posted under real names as the style of the forum didn't suggest anything else. To gain access to the MO section there required a user name so perhaps that was why we lurk under pseudonyms? Either that or because it might help to slow down any lawyers trying to sue us for every penny!
