the standard works are the Adair encyclopedias of dove magic,( check ebay) .They are quite hard to find, but worth their weight in gold to anybody seriously thinking about working with birds.

Tony Clarke has a number of different items on dovework, which are fantastic too.

Funny you mention this as I was watching some Lance Burton videos on youtube the last couple of days thinking I'd like to work with doves occasionally too.

I'd like to do dove magic but our mom is terrified of doves, not to mention birds in general, so until I move out that's out of the question.

I heard that parakeets (the smaller ones) are easier to train but I may be wrong.

Barton: Have you read the Bible, Pete?
Pete: Holy Bible?
Barton: Yeah.
Pete: Yeah, I think so. Anyway, I've heard about it.

From keeping a pet parakeet/budgie, I can tell you they're brighter than doves -- which is not necessarily a good thing, because they get bored and restless pretty quickly, and can turn irritable. They're also noisy, with a penetrating shriek. Doves are happy to sit quietly and wait.

Hey is a little bit of advice about doves.

If you get a few doves remember to use each of them in the different methods that you have chosen to produce them. Take note which bird seems better for each effect. Once noted, use the same bird for that effect. This way the bird will ALWAYS know what it needs to do and will act more relax.

The first books you need are on the care of doves. I know that nobody wants to hear it but they are living creatures and not just magic props. Be prepared to be a responsible pet owner. After that make sure you can actually use them in venues in your area. There are plenty of venues which used to allow acts with animals in them and don't anymore.

i am looking to start 'dove' magic. doing some research, a lot of people call their pigeons doves.

does/have any one use pigeons rather than doves?

very very true Bmat, if you hadn't already said it I would have done. :D

If you're thinking about using any animal in your routine, apart from the welfare side of things (which is VERY IMPORTANT as they're not just magic props and will need looking after for the rest of their lives. Which for some animals may well be longer than you're doing your routine for) you also have to think about the fact that many members of the public are totally against using performing animals (myself included) and you may well find that you're not booked by certain people because you use animals.

I don't think this is as much an issue in the states but it is here in Britain. I've heard lots of people moaning about the bad treatment of a rabbit, bird and yes even goldfish after watching a magician. I've even seen parents pick up their children and walk out on a magician when they found out that he was going to use a rabbit.

As seen in the 101 TT Tricks book: "... load two alive gold fish together with plenty of water into your TT..."

You won't believe it... but that's actually from a children's magic book - sad, really. Ahh, the book also includes several methods to vanish cigarets...

Sad, really.

Tssss....
