Memories of Harold Taylor

Postby HaroldTaylor'sNiece » Jan 15th, '09, 22:48

Hello one and all
I am a niece of the late Harold Taylor. I am desperatly wanting help in obtaining memories of Harold .
You see my mother, now well into her 80's was the youngest sibling, Harold being one of the eldest. Mum's fast loosing her sight and has asked if I can try and get info about Harold, hence my asking you!

I have joined another uk magic forum so some of you may have seen this request there!!! I'm covering all my bases :)

Do you have memories of Harold Taylor to share? Or know of anyone else who has?
Any photo's, posters, etc which you could copy and or even send a high quality jpg for me to use and copy?
Any videos- I'm trying to find the segment of the David Nixon Show, series 5 episode 6, 10 may 1976 where he was on with Little and Large. Mum would be over the moon to see Harold 'live' again!
Maybe taped shows or radio interviews and could send copies or mp3's?
I know Genii and MUM had him on the front cover, do you have the cover(s) to photograph along with article(s) of those mags or others? (I missed out on getting some through an internet auction site!)
Might there be any pics or records of him in any magic circle archives you know of which could be photographed?
Did you perform with him?
His flamboyance- was it off-stage as well as on?
Or anything else I've not covered?
Do you have any items, books, mags you wish to sell? (I have Angle of the Pro on order!!)

As there are a number of nephews and nieces I am seriously thinking about putting up a website devoted to Harold Taylor. May I add your memories, quotes and any photos suitably credited to you?
Someone who has contacted me said it would be great to get any interviews (memories, pictures, articles) which I obtain, recorded for history.

I just want to make very sure that I get your permission to use what you share with me, before I put it on the internet to share with my cousins, their children and indeed the general public.
I am proud to be Harold's niece!

Best wishes to you all :D

Hello Harold Taylor's Niece,

I've just contacted my mentor who knew Harold. He was a member of the Inner Magic Circle so if you contact them (just Google Magic Circle) I'm sure they will be able to help.

I'm also told that he wrote at least one book and produced several lecture notes. His wife was always called 'Precious' in company and made him wear outgoing and flamboyant clothing. PM me if I can help more.

Tenko.

There is a famous story about Harold Taylor trying to cross the border between the US and Canada to do a lecture tour. You are supposed to have a work permit to enter the US even to do a lecture at a magic club.
Most (and in fact probably all) lecturers just don't bother.

Harold made the mistake of crossing the border with some idiot magician in tow to accompany him. The border guard asked Harold what his purpose was to enter the United States and if he had been alone he would no doubt have answered that he was on holiday. However his idiot companion in a burst of hero worship enthusiasm exclaimed, "This is the famous Harold Taylor. He is a world famous magician who is coming to America to lecture to magicians"

That led to poor Harold being banned from entering the US for 5 years.

The only other thing I know about Harold was the owner of a night club called the Gargoyle. His name was Jimmy Jacobs. He said to me "Harold Taylor is a TERRIBLE magician. But what a charmer! He doesn't need to be any good because of his great charm on stage"

Once I saw a magician in the audience criticising another performer who was indeed pretty bad. Harold was seated behind him and interrupted the critic and said "At least he is working which is probably more than you are"

Hello Niece of Harold Taylor,
My mother was the sister of Harold Taylors wife ' Precious', and as a child i would some times go to there house
in Hendon where they lived, and play with Colin his son, & at one time we went to the same school on Hendon Way. Hendon.
When ever we went visiting to his home & Harold was at their between engagements he would do some
conjuring tricks just for me, he was such a charming & witty man.
Later on my mother took me to see him in" Educating Archie with Peter Brougth" at the Shepherds Bush Empire
which is a B.B.C. studio now, this was of course in the 1950's.
He was of course a brilliant ventriloquist as well and very under underestimated in my opinion.
The last time i saw Harold was on t.v. in Canada back in 1968, where my wife and i where living
at that time.
If you need to contact me, its Mike Carr

Hi Harold's neice.
I remember Harold in 1953 -1955... He was the Raid Recognition Officer at RAF Hill House which was a Part of RAF Bentley Priory at RAF Stanmore Park.
I had dealings with him on a daily basis in my duties. We all knew that he was a member of the Magic Circle and he used to keep us entertained when we had a lull on night duty during excercise. He arranged for 10 guarenteed 10 seats on the Educating Archie radio show every week. I still have my reference from him on my discharge book.
I do believe he got an early discharge from the RAF in order to appear on the very first ITV childrens show...can't remember the name.
He had a ample amount of hair which was reminiscent of Danny Kay. He was a very nice easy going man and was liked by everyone in the section.
I do know that he used to do party's for The Qeeens children when they were very young.
I hope this gets to you and maybe fill in a few gaps.
best wishes.....John
