Iceman, I haven't watched the DVD in a while, but from what I can remember, you can make a number of the required props for yourself. Others have to be purchased. Your best bet is to watch the DVD first and then decide which of the effects you would like to perform; you can then take steps to make or purchase the appropriate prop(s).

I seem to remember Alakazam selling a 'Dead Zone' set (which is a routine from the DVD) but the cost was somewhat prohibitive!

Seems to have gone from their site now but was somewhere around the £800 mark!

Of course, the DVD includes a method that doesn't require it.....

Some effects are just not for hobbyists. That's one of them. (Unless you happen to be a rich hobbyist).

Alakazam are now taking pre-orders for this and seeing as I can never order just one thing I'm left with the tough decision as to which of Mr Nyman's other products I should purchase. If the DVD is going to come with cards for The Hidden, should I buy that at the same time or should I get something else?

I've been looking for reviews of all of the effects available on this TM but it appears you only have good words to say about them and this makes it very hard to decide! Why can't Andy produce some c*** (not the best) effects so I won't have to buy them!

There's no point getting the Hidden separately if you're going for Get Nyman. Dead of Night is probably the best bet, as it's the most difficult thing to produce yourself, and I believe would cost you more to do than just buying it pre-made.

or, consider saving up, and buying his book Bulletproof instead? all his lecture notes, a dvd interview thingy, and loads of new effects too...

the lecture notes are pretty much what you get on Get Nyman, but i dunno, i just enjoyed reading the notes more for some reason...

I agree - the explainations with Pete Firman and Ali Cooke are fantastically entertaining. Also the bonus interview, the Sophie Trick and Andy's Svengali Demo are also fantastic fun....

Just wondering before I buy it, how much of the material on Get Nyman requires extra trick/gimmick decks?

And can any of the material be used a purely inspiration e.g. changed, yet using similar ideas but with different themes?

IIRC correctly, all of the card effects require some gimmicks, one of which is partially included. I say partially as you could perform it with what you receive but to do it with the same final impact as Andy performs it you'd need to buy another cheap, readily available gimmick deck.

As for the non-card effects, everything is very changable, the underlying methods and subtleties can be used for almost any imaginble 'theme' - the only limit is your creativity. A subtlety discussed on this DVD is one that's referred to in SO many other author's works, it's really popular.

As to whether you should buy it depends on your performance, if you're looking for some brilliant card-based mentalism then yes, it's a belter. If you prefer more themed, 'real world' (for want of a better phrase) effects than I personally would pick up the International Magic lecture instead. And it's a tenner cheaper. Bonus.
