I, when practising, always get the deck into order from a new deck.

When performing however, I always use it pre-set-up, bar one faro.

I have performed the any poker hand called for routine, it's beautiful and the ACAAN a number of times.

I now use Martini by R P Wilson as my ACAAN, simply because it's sleightless and amusing.

I'm currently working on the Predicted Triumph routine and will hopefully soon performing it.

this is heart warming stuff

so, what % of amateurs and professionals do you think could do this stuff?

are there any you wouldn't attempt?

I have no idea what the percentage is. I've never met them all.
All that matters is yourself.

I haven't read through them all, but there are several that I wouldn't attempt purely because they wouldn't suit me. Or, they have a lot of complicated sleights with an end result that I don't think justifies the difficulty.

I hate 87.2% of magicians.

Very difficult for who? Me?

If so, about 50%.

Here's something that should set things straight.

No matter what your skill level, you WILL learn the memorized deck sequence.

If you are serious about card magic, sooner or later, you will realise that a memorized deck is extremely useful.

There are plenty of effects in here that an average card handler could easily pull off, some that ANYONE could pull off.
There are some that are very difficult, but can be mastered. You just have to spend some time with them.

Even though it's quick to learn, it certainly isn't a book for somebody who wants a quick fix in card magic.

Magic Magic have it for £37.99. There was a copy on Magic Week the other day for £20 but that got snapped up pretty sharpish.

Don't Fabian. A jump from Born to Perfom to this is too big of a gap. Spend your money elsewhere on some more basic material.

But, is there a problem with picking up stuff that may be beyond your current ability level? Apart from anything else the easy to learn memory system would be pretty handy and give a lot of scope for effect development. At various times I've bought material that's turned out to be too hard for me but after a few months and years I've returned to it and been pleasantly surprised by the ease with which I've learned it. The more reference material you have better I reckon.

In fact all this perfect faroing and diagonal palm shifting is all well and good for your fellow magicians but really, in real life to people who know nothing of magic, you might as well stick a card under an ashtray and riffle force a dupe. There, I've said it.

I thought this sounded very interesting and although I've never even attempted a faro shuffle (I think that's like a riffle, only without riffling (if that makes sense :? )), I think I'd enjoy trying some memorized deck work. I also wondered what system would be used to memorize the cards with the system, but then I thought I could always try Derren Brown's stuff from his "Tricks of The Mind" book, where he talks about the ancient Greek art of Loci, and the Peg system (although I prefer his version to the original) and thought that if I did that I could probably do most of the routines in the book... well... the EASY ones anyway  .
Don't you think I should try this book? Whilst it is probably the most expensive magic trick I'll have ever bought, the reviews I've seen for it seen only positive, and if none of my specs at school ask me to shuffle (although some might  ) then I don't NEED to be able to do a perfect faro to use this awesome book, do I?
I love the idea behind this book and feel I could get a lot from it because I love memory work :D hehe
Or should I get CC 1 + 2 as you suggested earlier Lenoir?

Thanks,
Fabian.

P.S: What do you think of the Loci system for deck memorization, and how do you rate it in comparison to Mnemonica?

Well, Mnemonica and Loci are very different. Loci can be used to memorize any deck of cards very quickly, whereas Mnemonica is A memorized deck. There is a bizarre way of learning it, and once learnt, it is extremely unlikely you'll forget it.

I have no doubt that you could learn it, it's just whether or not you would be able to do much with it!

Have you got MSN? I think I could give some solid advice easier on there!

For me, that paragraph sums up my thoughts on Mind, Myth and Magick by T. A. Waters. It may be a "postgraduate course in mentalism", but it contains some superb material (and essays) that I have been able to use, neophyte that I am.

Sorry to go off on a tangent. As you were.

Me too sorry. Just thought that I'd stick in an informed opinion while the situation arose.
