Paul Gordon's Card Capers 10th May 2009 (Personal Thoughts)

Postby heronjester » May 10th, '09, 23:33

Well, I’ve just got back from Paul Gordon’s Card Capers Day at Worthing (all right I got back a little while ago but I had to eat something!) and I must say what a brilliant day it was. It was a thoroughly entertaining, very informative and worthwhile day.

Paul went through some astonishing card magic, with full explanations, which blew all of us in the room away. He gave lots of tips, not only on the tricks themselves, but on patter, audience management, sleights and a great deal of insight into entertaining people in the real world.

Paul is a very down to earth, friendly approachable guy, who is very enthusiastic about his art and answered our questions, and even did some routines requested by the audience.

And as a bonus The Stoner was there too! :D (Great to meet you, only sorry that I didn’t get chance to say goodbye.)

I think that we could have all stayed another couple of hours being entertained.

All in all an excellent day well spent, and I reckon I’ll be going again next time.

HJ

Yeah it was a great day. Nice to have met you Mr HJ! :D

According to my scribbled notes Paul ran through Nomadic aces, Shocked aces, Twister, Diminishing not likely (of course!), Knock 'em Dead, Powerhouse, Strike more than a match, Totally baffling card control, Psychotronic rides again, Easy ace estimation (great stuff!), Caused Effect and a couple of others. He also spent time on various sleights (jog shuffle, one-handed palm, straddle faro, etc) and gave tons of useful advice on audience management, patter and general "life skills".

There were also a couple of open Q&A sessions that covered a number of interesting points and opinions, all discussed in Paul's normal open, easy-going and humourous style. Highlights were "Can we book Paul Gordon the comedian?" Who caused all that posh hotel damage? And the story of the very expensive (and "stolen") watch!

It was also fun to spend a day at the seaside (Worthing) and I particularly enjoyed eating some excellent fish-n-chips while sitting on the pebbly beach throwing stones into the sea. You won't get that at Leamington Spa!

Great day - highly recommended.
