Ban Newbies from replying to intro threads?

Postby Mark Waddington » May 18th, '09, 10:24

Now, I know its sounds like an odd thing to suggest, but can we please stop members who have say less than 50 posts from replying in the introductions threads?

Ive noticed a trend of people joining up, not posting much of any use, but padding out their post numbers by saying "Hi, welcome to TM" constantly. Its smacks of just welcoming people so they can get into the trade sections etc...

Ive noticed one member (no names mentioned) who as of 10.28 on 18.05.09 has 39 posts to their profile. Of those 39... 19 say nothing more than "Hi, welcome to TM"

Can anything be done??

Mark

Nothing can be done automatically and, as the post count is largely irrelevant for most purposes, hiking the count up like this doesn't actually change the status. Perhaps these newcomers are just being friendly  ?

This is the kind of thinking that means I only very rarely post in the Introductions section.
Unfortunately it doesn't stop me posting completely unnecessary (read: stupid) posts elsewhere.

I don't think something can be done against this but I share the same feeling.
The reason why I don't post stuff in the introduction section is because I feel like I'm just starting out on this forum, so it would be weird to welcome some one to the TM family since I'm not even a "full" member.

Im actually of the opposite opinion...

When I first joined, I didnt feel i had much to contribute (probably still don't :P ) but knowing how isolated you feel being the newbie, its nice to say hi so that others dont feel like that....

I'll boost my post count by totally agreeing with the original post, the example highlighted confirms this.

As post count doesn't really matter on here I don't see that it's a problem. It makes for a friendly welcome. You don't gain access to the restricted areas through posting more, so it won't benefit them that way. There isn't any real negative to people posting more in those threads. There would possibly be an argument to preventing writing reviews straight away, but I can't see any major issue with the introductions section.

Bottom line - it's quality rather than quantity (as I keep telling Mrs.M... )

I greet alot of people, I'm a newbie and i don't have alot of posts BUT IN MY DEFENSE. I also make a fair amount of value treats and replys. I make revieuws, post tips and try to contribute. So it's hard to say who's a newbie and who not.

Greetings

I can see your thinking (I've known forums that automatically give privileges after so many posts; I've even known forums that delete your account if you aren't active — and by active I mean posting — for a particular period of time!)

But I think on TM it does no harm. Like Fairie says, it can be nice to say hi to your fellow newbies. I think perhaps the real issue here is the post count status thing under posters usernames. Can these be disabled at all? I generally find these pointless and encourages people to post to get to the next 'level'

i've heard through the grapevine that when women join these kinds of forums, they get a certain percentage of odd and freaky messages from guys...just look whenever a woman joins here, rabid hordes of very bad flirting and innuendo...

i really must stop it...

it would be nice to have a few more female members (phnar innuendo that) here, y'know...to tidy up and that...

kidding..

i've now forgotten my proper point...but it wont stop me hitting "submit"

It's funny you created a topic on this, Mark. I've noticed your statements too.

When I first got here (not so long ago), I immediately thought about this subject. There will always be newbies who'll want to boost up their posts by saying "hi, welcome". They're on every forum.
Ofcourse the number of posts doesn't count here, but some other people will always look at the number of posts someone made.

I'm with you on this one.

Isn't it possible to give someone the restriction to make a certain number of posts in a forum?

Not sure about any other Forum but on TM there are no restrictions possible - other than a complete ban for being naughty!

Does it really matter?

Look at it from the person who has posted the introuctions point of view. It's welcoming, and makes TM appear to be nice a friendly. That can't be bad.

Some of the new members may well be spamming a plethora of hellos just to up the message count - but frankly I would rather they do that than post a lot of "I have this too" posts in the reviews section.

However - maybe - just maybe they are just being friendly?
