Grammar police!

Postby queen of clubs » Jun 7th, '09, 19:43

I'm bored, so I thought I'd point out that "Magician's Hall of Fame" should actually read "Magicians' Hall of Fame" since the former literally refers to a single magician.

This has been annoying me for a while now: I wake up screaming, drenched in sweat... curiously only from the waist down.

And the grammar used in this post just makes it funnier.

I can see this thread reaching a few dozen pages.

What's frightening about it all is the fact that so few (especially in the U.S.) know much if anything about proper grammar let alone spelling... mostly due to the text talk movement and of course a horrid public education system.

It could also be that language evolves and grammar is often stagnated and rarely keeps up.

It may also be that the trappings of a rigid and unnecessary discipline are being exposed for what they are.

Or it could be we are very very lazy.

There is not a great deal wrong in the original post. I'd add a comma before "since" and transpose 'literally' and 'refers', but other than that it's pretty reasonable.

I suppose the real question should be, does this Hall of Fame actually *belong* to any magician, singular or plural? If the Hall is *of* magicians then Magicians Hall of Fame, without a possessive apostrohpe, would be correct.

Craig, you missed out a comma or two and that's an incorrect usage of an ellipsis ;)

If I am correct, there would be no need to use a comma after the Queen's second quotation in her original post since it is far more of a name than of a phrase.

As for why the grammar downfall is taking place; probably a simple case of younger people not reading as much as they should.

EDIT ON EDIT: Just re-read her post. I see you were not stating that because of the quote. I apologize for that.

I second those thoughts. I can attest to the fact that "education" majors in US university systems tend to focus more on how to create fun games using oatmeal cookies than they do on knowing material. I have edited a few "English Education" papers and was terrified at the overall ineptitude.

Any errors I make in this post are blamed on my dog for taking off certain keys with his claws. The keyboard still works, but not like it used to! :D

I am currently on a PGCE course. I was shocked at the general level of literacy amongst my fellow students, particularly the English teachers. We have to complete "skills tests" in Literacy and numeracy; many of my fellow students have had to resit a number of these.

On the other hand, I had several grammar errors brought to my attention in one of my assignments; apparently stylistic preferences count as correct grammar in the education system here (and a single use of wander instead of wonder in a different assignment constitutes "grammatical and spelling errors throughout").

Mixing this topic with pet hates; Brought rather than bought, wrong forms of there, they're and their or your and you're make me want to kill the perpetrator.

I hope I've not made any mistakes myself recently!
