Cheers for posting this!

I plan to do a course next year (funds permitting). The course sounds like a lot of fun and the idea of getting out in the public to try it really appeals as I wouldn't have to confidence to do that alone.

That sounds great.
I've just been on his website and have been looking at The Manchurian Approach, hypnosis for magicians. It looks really good.
Thanks for this review.

although I have not been on the course I have worked with Ant and Amit and consider them great friends and great hypnotists. I can not recommend them highly enough!

Ant has a wonderful way of breaking down the misconceptions of this fantastic art and a nurturing style in the classroom.

If you are interested in learning this art form (and it is an art form) Ant is your man!

Hypnosis/hypnotic suggestion can take your magic to new levels. What you can do is only limited my your own imagination...

If anyone is interested in seeing what hypnosis can do for magic there will be a load of us in Covent Garden on the 12 August.

the only thing that puts me off these courses is that its "street"...

and therefore, to me, is seen as a bit mercenary...

now, dont get me wrong, loved RIP - ant knows that, and i rate him as a mentalist too..as well as a generally good lad...

its just i'd like it to be more "classy" than approaches on the street i suppose, thats whats put me off joining up for the class really...

i still may go to one of the london ones later this year though...undecided...

i like using suggestion, fully on hypno (lets not argue the difference!) would be appealing too...

So I am a hypnotherapist ... and yes we do more than sit around and talk to you nicely for 60 minutes and collect your money :P

Serious isn't the word I would use Clinical is the word I would use. We are just more methodical in our goals and the methods we use to achieve them.

As for the experience of feeling / being silly. Sticking someones hand to their forehead is the same thing as asking them to cluck like a chicken.

The only difference is if the hypnotee feels they are sharing the experience or if they are the entertainment. If they share the experience they will always have a wonderful time. If you force them to be the entertainment then they will generally have less fun (your mileage may vary)

Street is stage hypnosis adhoc and one on one. There is really no difference besides doing a mass induction and participant control.

Ant... come over to the US and West Coast... I am terribly curious to see you in action :)

Ah, you are repeating Ant's mantra of, "Hypnotism is a skill and therefore should be demonstratable anytime!"

The reasons for why a hypnotherapist doesn't typically work within the confines of the binary event is because our goals are too serious to risk.

Typically its a bad idea to get into an adversarial relationship with your client when you need them to follow your instructions.

Losing rapport and credibility can ultimately cost the client valuable time and money. If they start dismissing hypnosis in general you may have actually put a huge roadblock into their recovery time. All in all even if WE as the hypnotherapist fails we want to ensure that hypnosis as a tool does not get tainted.

Additionally we use a lot more information than the hypnotic process. We check diet, health habits, emotional stresses, coping mechanisms, drug use, medical history, etc.

Most hypnotherapist don't see the world like a stage hypnotist would hypnotism is a byproduct of the therapy not the other way around. Of course there are plenty of cross overs but the second you put the context of therapy into the process you have a completely different set of goals and tools to use.

Anyway my 2 cents :)

i've been thinking about this more, and its not the fact that its "street" as such - its more what is done with the skillset in general....

which is neither ant's nor anyone elses responsibility (i don't think)...

its like the swami, do you use it tell people the name of a dead person, or someone they went to school with? one could unsettle and upset, the other just gives them a pleasant memory...

i dont want to do "hands stuck to head", or anything like that, i want a more surreal and unique experience...so i may well sign up for the next london session and apply my mind to it all :)

Hi Iain

Thanks for your thoughts. Always good to hear a clinical perspective. My only additional thoughts around the binary testing are these. If you do say an arm floating up to the heavens on helium balloons then lock the arm stiff at the top you are testing your work and 'proving' hypnosis to the client. This process can be then used to deepen and fractionate allowing the client to 'experience' the hypnotic state (rather than merely having the time dilation at the end of the session). This in turn will strengthen the believe and acceptance of therapeutic suggestions.

The other point is that sadly many trained hypnotherapist are scared to test their work as they have little function to deal with perceived failure. Many have only learned a progressive muscle relaxation (PMR)and avoid rapid induction as they associate this with a vulgar stage hypnotist.

I am not making a blanket statement about most hypnotherapist as I know many that are excellent practitioners. There is nothing inherently wrong with PMR but it is not right for everyone and ever situation.

I also do street hypnosis - I wear a modern suit, am very well spoken, gain instant rapport with people and make them feel great. At no point would I suggest this was in any way mercenary! :D

All the best
