Balloon Modelling!?

Postby ryanmagic » Aug 2nd, '09, 21:03

Just a quick one for ya'll, if there any balloon modelling masters around, how long would it roughly take the average kids entertainer to start using it in their act?

Cheers, all on-topic answers are much appreciated :D

Kids entertainers don't need to be balloon masters, if they're billing themselves as magicians first and foremost. Bear in mind, that kids at these parties want their ballons NOW NOW NOW!, you don't have time to be very creative. A reasonable repertoire of one-balloon models will be sufficient for a balloon add-on to a magic show. And once the boys find out you can do a sword, that's all they'll want.

This is a very good resource for beginners and more experienced ballooners.

Buy a bag of 260Qs and start twisting. Personally, I'd only bother learning models that use 260s unless you want to get creative and make balloons the main feature of your act.

Thanks a bunch Pete!

I've never been remotely interested in balloon modelling until I had a nosey at the site you linked to. Now I find myself looking at prices for packs of balloons so that I can make Optimus Prime!!!!!!  :D

This forum has cost me a bl**dy fortune since I joined.

Thanks alot, I'll aim to play around with the ones recommended so cheers to pcwells! However for balloons they do seem fairly expensive; any sites you can recommend?
Many Thanks

I tend to get them from retailers like MagicNevin or Magic Box when I'm buying other stuff. They're reasonably cheap on ebay too. For what it's worth, of the Qualatex range,, I like the neon ones best as they're less prone to breaking than some of the normal ones.

I'll be interested to hear if anyone has better things to say about other balloon brands.

Well, since you brought it up...
I prefere the sempertex ones myself, i find them less prone to popping and that extra length allows for a wider range of possibilities (eg, you (read: i) can't twist a one balloon tiger out of a 260Q but can from a 260S).
I would also say I prefer the colour range on the sempers though I will have to check out the Quali neons before i pass real judgement.

To learn the basics won't take long. There are loads of books for basic models try amazon and search for balloon modelling.

I would also recomend Sempertex over Qualatex.

http://www.sempertexballoons.co.uk/ is the cheapest and most efficient place to get them.

For a very smooth transition from basic balloons to doing something more satisfying i could not more highly recommend Tony Hyam's e-book "Twisted Reality", all very clearly explained and well written with a handful of great, advanced looking models that I was able to make within one week of twisting.

Beware, this stuff is highly addictive and between us my housemate and I have probably ordered over £400 of balloon stuff in the last couple of months, the da*n things are taking over the flat. :)

Thanks all! Greatly appreciated. I'll order some 260Q's give them a play and hopefully test them in my next booking then give them the yes or the no!
Cheers again

Having seen Lawrence in action with the balloons, and Ballooni the Great in particular, I can confirm that hot chicks (NB: post-modern irony not sexism) just love those balloons. :D

The only real problem with learning and practicing balloon modelling is what to do with them after you've finished. You might make 20 or 30 in a session and the room resembles an explosion in a psychedelic elephant rendering plant. It's very weird twhen they all have faces and you have to put them in a bin bag like so many kittens to drown.
