Never had one of these but they were a staple effect at School Magic shows yonks ago.

You can probably buy suitably sized cakes at the local supermarket so no need to do a Delia and start baking all hours of the day and night! The possibility to produce a Birthday Cake at Birthday party gigs is something which comes to mind.

I'd say the ability to buy a cake was more useful!

Note you need to borrow a suitable hat, though. This might not be easy, as hats are rarely worn.

You could always give one to a spectator in advance and then "borrow it", but you'll have to get it back afterwards.

Ah! Good point. You might get lucky and find a few baseball caps but they may not be suitable. Woolly hats aren't much use either. Of course, you could always restrict the performance to Police Benefit gigs - there'd be plenty of hats to choose from.

I used to help my Son with his Mobile Disco business a few years ago and one night we were booked at a birthday party but it wasn't until we got there that we realised they were all boys and girls in blue. And the tax disc on the van was ever so slightly overdue - only a day or five but it still meant I had to go park it in the darkest part of the car park as close to a wall as possible and I thought I'd have spend all night grinning nicely to them in case one of them spotted it. I needn't have worried - after less than half an hour they were all well out of their trees on booze and we all had a great night!

ah, this used to be known as a welsh rarebit pan. What an old item. I have to say i am surprised that it is still being made.
For those with memories, Paul Daniels used one on one of his last christmas specials, where he cooked a christmas pudding in a top hat. And it should be a top hat realy, as you need the depth to hide the extra something.
think "dove pan", and you will be going somewhere towards the method.

I have seen a routine by Robert Baxt that uses a baseball cap - i picked it up from Mike Giusti's web site.

I have never tried it out - but if you are looking for a method where you don't need a hat that can stand on a table then this might be for you

I've got the trick and had it for a while now. You don't have to be able to make cakes, but you will need to be able to buy one that fits in the pan. Using some flash paper or any other type of flammable material is a good idea in the trick to make it seem as if you really are baking something. The only problems is there is a lot of cleaning to do, unless you like the smell of rotten eggs. Another thing is that this is a children's/comedy routine as you have to make yourself look like an idiot by 'forgetting' to to the trick with the pan that you handed out for examination; instead, it looks to the spectator like you are putting the ingredients into the hat and setting it on fire.
