Lee Smith is a full-time professional magician and regular poster on this forum. He is also a key part of the monthly London magic/hypno meets and an all round good guy, always willing to show and share ideas and routines. He performs fast entertaining magic and is a master of excellent patter and misdirection. I've seen (or rather not seen) him doing top changes in front of groups of magicians without anyone catching him - he's that good. As part of his approach to sharing information Lee has got some lectures coming up soon and the accompanying lecture notes are available for £10 in the "magicians only" section of his website (http://www.walkaboutmagic.com).

The lecture notes PDF is 27 pages long and contains a number of routines plus general useful advice on doing walkabout magic (preparation, arrival, approach, etc). It's nicely laid out with photo illustrations where required.

The routines covered are as follows:

The Trick With No Name - An indifferent card magically jumps from the spectator’s hand and is replaced with their chosen card.
The Twirl Revelation - An indifferent card changes into the spectator’s chosen card right before their eyes.
Two Card Transposition - Two cards are lost in the deck then found and then they swap places.
Switch Trick - A stunning trick that uses one of the best glimpses of a card you will ever see.
Crazy Cuffs - A classic of magic explained and a borrowed ring jumps onto the band for a kicker ending.
Key To Amazement - A self-working miracle where a thought of card is
found under seemingly impossible conditions.
Trans-box-ition - A card jumps under the card box not once but twice and even escapes a spectator’s hand.
Just Think - Predict a card that the spectator merely thinks of and repeat the feat for an amazing kicker ending.
Business Lunch - Lee's preferred handling for the Out-to-Lunch principle leaving the spectator with the best memento they could have……your business card
Coming Together - Two signatures end up on the same card.
Bold Business - An amazing feat of mind power, leave the spectator thinking you really can read minds. A miracle using nothing more than a marker pen and some business cards.

There are no tough sleights required here and anything you might not have come across is explained in the notes (e.g. KM move).

All of these routines come from Lee's working repertoire and that means these notes can pick out the key points for maximum effect with the layman. The routines probably won't wow experienced magicians, but for the beginner to intermediate performer there's lots of top-class material that can go straight into your act.

The magic here doesn't require gimmicks and gaffs; just a standard deck, couple of rubber bands, a pen and your business cards. Basically these notes give you a workable walkabout set in one pocket - and all produced by an experienced performer rather than a "bedroom magician".

Well worth checking out.

Yeah - as per Lee's comment at the bottom of that thread this is produced with full permission from Patrick. All other routines are fully credited where required.

Hi guys,

Thanks for a grand review,

I am having the list of effects and the shop etc updated on the website in the next couple of days. Please note the the notes are in PDF format from the website orders, and please allow upto 24hrs (But will be much sooner) for them to get to you as im doing all the orders myself at the moment.

They come in booklet form when brought from the lecture.

I am really pleased with the lecture and the notes. I have included some of my favourite effects and a couple of ideas that I have never put out before, I am extremely pleased with TRANS-BOX-ITION and i know alot of working magicians have added this to their working reportoire.

There is something for all skill levels and none of the routines are complicated, and some self working.

Most effects can be perfromed anywhere anytime, and are all impromptu, visual and most of all try'd and test in the real world thousands of times.

I have also touched on the other aspects of magic. Pocket, audience management Etc.

If People use just one thing from them i will be happy

Thanks again for great review.

ok, after meeting Lee Smith and witnessing some of his top work i took the plunge and passed him a tenner for some lecture notes. As stated above there is quite alot you can get from these notes. On top of great effects Lee talks about the business side of things, such as the approach, getting to te venue, how to prepare, openers, middle tricks and closers.
2 Card transpostion is fab, i use it all the time if i have more than 2 specs to watch. Also love doing trans - box - ition, simple superb and always hits a wow factor.
Lee also talks about the crazy mans handcuffs. He does credit other magicians in his notes. For £10, you cannot go to wrong with these notes. It is full of good advice and tricks that can be done in the hands. Notes from a magician that has tested all the routines that the notes cover. Fantastic and very simple to learn too.

Can you order them in booklet form or is that just from the lectures?

Hi there,

Thanks for your interest.

At the moment they are only in booklet form for the lecture itself.

I may start shipping out booklets in the near future but at the moment I just dont have time and dont like to keep people waiting. Will prob have an option for both on the site after Christmas.

So at the mo only PDF im afraid, unless you can catch the lecture somewhere. :D

Where are the lectures being held? Any near sheffield by chance?
This sort of closeup magic is right up my street, so if there's one I can get to I'd definately make the trip

Honestly mate, t'll defienately be worth the trip to see Lee. He is one of the nicest blokes in magic i have met. He has good sound advice and his magic is so good. I have been doing magic now for a long time and found his lecture notes to be great. All of the effects can be done without set ups too. I really highly recommend his stuff. Don't get me wrong, you et this fantastic Bill Malone dvds etc etc, but most require a surface to work on, not with Lee's stuff. It is practcal and highly engaging for the lay person. :D

Ah hell, have to order it. This comes too highly recommended to resist my C.U.P.S. lol.

What's a tenner anyway, sounds well worth the money. If theres any dates/locations on the lectures too, that'd be cool, to see if I could attend. If they are in London, I could possibly crash at my friend's house who I've been meaning to go see too, as long as I'm not working.

I have a few lectures booked for next year and some waitng to get back to me. As soon as i have dates confirmed i will let you all know.

At the moment the nearest to sheffield is the Leicester magic circle on 12th April (prob still a bit far?)

Lee.

I had a quick scan through this last night and then focused on the opening tricks section. A very, very good little set of lecture notes. Ok, the effects arent groundbreaking, but they work, and they must work well.

Theres no "filler" in the notes, its not a fancy publication, its just information, which is how I think all lecture note should be! Anyone who is wanting to go professional with close up in any way should read this - a worthy investment at a tenner.

Just out of interest, Lee - do you always open with a card routine?

Thanks

Mark

Hi Mark,

I would like to say a big thanks to everyone, I had some really nice emails yesterday from people who was really pleased with the notes, its so nice to know people are using some of these effects that have served me well for a long time.

Mark.

Many thanks for you comments. I do talk about this subject in the lecture as i think its important, I have try'd many openers and for a long time opened with a one coin routine that ended in a jumbo prodution, worked well but I went back to the card effects I mentioned in the notes.

I always use the same opener (it is pretty much three very quick card effects put together) I just find for me it is the fastest most visual way I have found to get their attention and to keep it. I then move on to the coin stuff.

There are a couple of effects in there -

Trans- box- ition & Coming together that I use all the time no matter what as they are so strong (Nearly didn't put these in) And the effect key to amazement is a real magician fooler if you perfrom it correct, it gets a great reaction even in a lecture setting.

I Have a few repertoir's and the effects in the notes are all what I still use in the real world. I thought about it hard and hopefully picked the effects that would appeal to any perfromer. I have lots of knuckle busting effects but I know that in lecture's this does not appeal to most peolpe, and juding by the reviews of the notes it sounds like I have managed to achieve what I was after, a simple visual impromptu but powerfull set that will appeal to everyone. I would like to say a massive thanks again to everyone and for all the orders.

If anyone has any problems feel free to pm me or email me, or if you see me at any conventions I am happy to go through anything in detail.

Lee.
