the real secrets of magic

Postby jordini101 » Feb 17th, '10, 17:16

i think it would be a great idea to start a section on "the real secrets of magic". many books discuss this subject. when i say the real secrets of magic i mean: proper ways to practice, how to develope tricks, the importance of clean hands, being yourself, calming nerves, developing a character, construction of an act, ect. magicians today view magic as a bunch of secrets, and yes, in a way it is. but, there is way more to being a good magician other than being able to watch a performer and know how to do every trick that they did. magic is an art, not a skill. thats why i think it would be a great contribution to the site, and to te people that view the site.

Hang around this forum long enough, post good posts, and one day you might find out that this already exists

but it shouldn't be, im thinkin of a place where beginers learn to become more clean, for lack of a better word, resticting such a section for the "pros" defeats the purpose. every BEGINERS magic book has this section. most more technical books like bobo, dont have a very extencive section on this, because they figure the "pros" know it.

Nah.

There is more than enough advice in the open forums, to give the earnest beginner a helping hand.
The restricted areas, are specialized to an extent, but allow posters to go into a bit more detail.

You cant discuss anything, and everything on open forums. Mainly because holding back information, can, and should encourage people to hunt it out for themselves.. You have to put some work into it.

:)

( and pros?trust me, few full time pros bother with forums)

ya know, i dont really find that as a true statement either, many pros like to keep in touch with whats new in the magic community... i work for a man named Kirk DeWeese who owns a magic shop and owns a computer shop also, he runs all sorts of magicians personal pages. see, most of the big named magicians dont go by there actual name on the sites, take the magic cafe, lance burton, jeff mcbride, tom mullica, daniel garcia, and tom burgoon for example all have an acount on there, and constantly talk on there, but they dont go by there normal name because they dont want to be bothered

All the points you mention have been discussed many times in the open forum areas, all you have to do is Search for them. It's also been suggested many times that a separate area be created where all these aspects can be gathered but that then brings forth the question of what goes in and what stays out. And if that ends up in IB I won't be surprised! Very often useful tips and hints on those topics will crop up in many unrelated threads which wouldn't be appropriate to a gathered area.

Bottom line, readers need to go and look for the information 'cos we can't offer it on a plate.

The restricted section doesn't hold all the secrets to turn a beginner into an overnight sensation. The "real" secrets there are generally just people's ideas they don't want to throw out over the public forum so that they can keep some measure of privacy for their routine or whatever.

Getting in is more a level of trust from fellow users and the moderators.

The things you are saying, tips on how to become more clean in performance, is practice. Study what material you have and practice the hell out of it. There, the "real" secret of magic, for free. Practice, perform, learn. Not exactly a glamorous fix all answer, but its the only way in the end.

Oh, also, Dale generally knows what he's on about, any beginners would be wise to listen to "Talk Magic's Mr Helpful" :P

What tends not to get mentioned is that the process of searching for answers (in books, for example) exposes you to other ideas along the way, all of which expands your understanding of magic far greater than if you were just handed the specific answer to your specific question.

I've lost count of the number of times I've dug a sleight or a method that I never thought I'd use from the back of my mind to get me from A to B in a routine.

I love to figure out magic tricks. The one card trick that has bemused me the most was when, David Blaine made a card magically appear in a little girls pocket. Then I thought, was it a plan? It must have been.
Any other opinions? :?:

Yeah, she was a cardboard cutout.

Just a random question Mandrake :p, I'm not entirely sure of the rules of such things, but are the Mental Alley and Restricted Areas 2 different places where you need two acceptances? Just I find it a little odd I can view 'Very Restricted', but not plain ol 'Restricted'
Probabl an answr in a really obvious place, but I have looked around, and it's always the last place you look

The Magicians Only Area and Mentalists Only Area are different with each having differing requirements for invitation. Apart from that, they're about the same inasmuch as there's nothing earth shattering in them , certainly no Holy Grail, but each has hosted gradual construction of effects which have gone on to be released commercially one way or another.

the restricted section is there for a reason. there are many many reviews on here about what people think about effects. the mods and people on this forum have respect for the art whether beginner or professional or hobbiest some secrets people do not want to know as i know there are some secrets i dont want to know i just enjoy the magic. like what was said by dale at the top hang around long enough and you might get to know but until then enjoy the forum and the reviews and read the advice that these guys give you learn more day day dont rush

have fun and enjoy

Quote "Mainly because holding back information, can, and should encourage people to hunt it out for themselves.. You have to put some work into it"

If I may play the devils advocate here. And I mean no disrespect. Are you saying "I had to hunt down the information, I had to work for it, Therefore everyone should have to do so since I did. ? Basically if some one asks why the reply is because that is the way it's always been done?

And for the record I am in agreement, I am just curious as to other points of view
