Cards in hat

Postby greedoniz » Mon Mar 15, 2010 11:31 am

Howdy!

I recently came across a video of an old U.F Grant effect called Cards in hat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnHRJeS855Y

Does anyone know where I can get hold of this effect apart from the 3 dvd set that you can buy? i would get the dvd set but it's a tad pricey for the one effect I would like and maybe theres a manuscript out there.

I tried lybrary but to no avail

That is a really nice effect and I love how clean this looks.
Thanks for the link but I cant be much more help than that.

I do know the method but good luck with hunting it down.

I was thinking maybe a medium would be able to help?

I have searched high and low and it seems my only option is to either contact the dead or fork out a bundle for the Dvd. Boy does that get right on my boobamajugs!

Hi. Sorry about my previous post. I made a typo error and its was meant to read I don't know the method!!

I think this effect is a great parlour piece and I would love to know more about this.

The closest thing I have seen is with an al bakers force deck and only one playing card could be selected.

I have a method or this video in mind but it's not the solution to what we see. It's not a handling which would do this effect justice.

With inspiration from the ABFD I have just thought of an alternative method for a very similar effect which would play well..
Think: Tossed deck!!

I had a look in Tarbell and that website previously and could find it in neither.

I also found a thread on the cafe which stated it was only available on an original lecture note which is rare so the DVD seems to be my only option...

I just hope that the effect is as clean as I hope it is and doesnt require a gimmicked hat, gimmicked deck, a dwarf and a matter converter

I dont know where you'll find this great effect. It doesnt require a gimmicked hat or gimmicked cards but there is a little 'something extra', along with a standard ri***e fo**e.
Good luck with your search, Its a nice effect thats rarely seen these days :)

I have gone ahead and got the U.F Grant 3-Dvd set.

I figured there is bound to be plenty of other material and ideas on there and I REALLY like the cards in hat effect

There is something quite like it in lesson 34 of the old Tarbell (not sure if its in the hardbound volumes):

11 - LOCATION OF CARDS IN A HAT SHUFFLE
EFFECT:
Several cards are selected, marked if desired, and returned to deck. Deck is shuffled and dropped into a
hat. Inside of the hat, cards are thoroughly shuffled around. Spectator is then asked to hold hat. Performer
reaches into hat with his right hand and brings out, one at a time, the selected cards.

The details are slightly different from the trick shown.

The one in Tarbell is a completely different trick to the U.F Grant one above, both in effect and method. The same effect as the one in Tarbell also appears in the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks entitled 'From a Hat', though it uses a different method :)

    Hello.

I just wanted to elaborate on my tossed deck idea as I think it would work very well as a parlour piece.
I have never performed this so it is only an idea. Please feel free to try it or play around with it.

The handling I have thought out would be simple.

Instead of having the tossed deck staggered it would sit in stack portions.

ExaMple: top portion all three of spades, centre portion all four of diamonds and the final portion all Jack of diamonds.
Every final card in the stack would have a pencil dot to indicate the new potion begins!!

Now, throw the deck out and perform as usual but instruct...

"I would like you to make a break where ever you fancy but roughly toward the top section"

Then the second you would instruct "roughly central" and the final "close to the bottom"

and instead of simply revealing the playing cards in the usual tossed deck idea . You would ask the Three volunteers to stand and ask the first volunteer to 'say stop' as you run the cards off. Once he calls stop you simply place his card in the hat.

Once the first selection has been made spread the cards and locate your marked card and cut at this point thus setting up your second volunteer to call stop and then make your final cut for your third volunteer.

You will now finish with the tossed deck verbal illusion and your three volunteers will sit. You can now show the three cards all different!!

This is a little vague as Im typing on my phone, travelling home on a train and knackered with a splitting head.

    However. Enjoy and be good.

Just a side note, in the Classic Magic of Larry Jennings, there is a signed card to hat...without any P*lming...however, although it's completely ungimmicked etc...the move you have to learn is so ridiculously difficult that it makes this whole post redundant!
