any ideas for a rat production? :)

Postby Will-o-Wisp » May 11th, '10, 17:13

I'm putting a kid's show together. The main character in the story is going to be my pet rat who has the "powers" to do magic. She would act like a magician and I'd be just some dude who happens to be friends with a magic rat ))) I've got the tricks and the presentation down, the only thing I'm having trouble with is how to actually produce the rat in the beginning.
I don't want to use any obvious aparatus like dove pan and stuff. Have tried some other dove prodiction methods but the beast just won't sit still in the bag.
Please let me know if you've experimented with something similar or if you just have any ideas. Many thanks.

I'd have thought the typical top-hat-style method would be idea. The bag would not be visible at any stage.

PS. When I read the subject line I thought you meant 'prediction' and I started to think of ways to use a mentalist rat :)

Mark Wilson's Complete course in Magic, p 376 - The production box, looks like it does what you want, and is cheap to make.

Rats have collapsable skeletons I'm pretty sure dove production techniques can be used for rats.

Invoke not reason. In the end it is too small a deity.

Le Petit Bateleur, thx man, I'll check it out.

Jean Eugene Roberts, you pack a dove up and it just sits in there motionless. Rat doesn't :(

Ah yes rats are known to chew aren't they.

No matter what method, when you produce it, pull a cigarette from the critter.
Then state : "Now you can say you've seens a magician pull a habit from a rat!"
Start the car!!!!!!!!

There's a ton of bits that can be done with most any small (easy to hold) animal such as small to mid-size rodents such as popping from the pages of a real story book, empty boxes (think of a large match box that's empty but then you open it to reveal a sleepy little fella in his bed... I'd hope you can think what we're talking about technique wise)

Study material for Canary manipulation in that most of the holders and steals can apply to a small critter... one of my favorite adaptations I've ever seen was a guy at the Magic Castle many years ago did a bit in which he smashes a rat and wipes up up with a bright colored silk... he shows the image of the flat and smashed critter, drops the silk down whilst holding one corner only. Gives it a bit or a flip and voila! The little fella is seen climbing out of the folds of the scarf and up to his hand... the scarf is opened to show no more smushed rodent... ala Doug Henning's popular bit using a small parrot.

I wish I could remember his name, there was a guy by in the 80's that manipulated Rats and Crows/Ravens in much the same manner as the traditional bird act... it was quite a nifty piece of business. The other guy from the Castle that worked with a Psychic Rat was the club's former Seance Medium, Mark Edward (but then, he did a floating dog for a while too  )

Hope all of this helps

Just checkin' - have you considered your target audience?

While doves, rabbits, kittens, pups have an "awwwww" factor - don't rats instil a "Bloody Hell, it's a dirty rat" reaction?

I like rats, but I'm not sure they will go over smoothly. If the magician is the rat should not the rat be producing you? Bob Little used to dress up as a giant dove and produce magicians. It was funny as all get out.
