Murder most foul-Paul Voodini

The Effect

A collection of two horrific and murderous routines, ideal for a wind-swept night of parlour entertainment.

Psychic Cluedo (Psychic Clue).

Become a psychic detective. Utilising a well-known board game, the mystery entertainer takes his guests on a journey of psychic discovery. A murder has been committed. One of your guests knows who it is, where the murder took place, and the weapon that was used to commit the foul act. Can any of your guests work it out using their own as yet untapped psychic powers? While your guests discuss notes, you enter a trance like state and emerge from the psychic realm with the information required to nail the killer!

The Whitechapel Messiah.

Travel back in time to a fog shrouded London of 1888. Jack the Ripper is on the loose and the police seem powerless to stop him! Using pseudo-hypnotic techniques and props that are readily available to all magicians and mentalists (a TT for example) you send a guest on the journey of a life time! Your guests will travel back thru time to the blood soaked cobblestones of old London town. They will discover the body of one of Jack's victims, they will hear the police whistles crying thru the fog, they will see the crowds appear at the murder scene, and then they will return safely back to the 21st Century. But wait! They've brought something back with them! A blood stained relic of their journey to prove that this was no trick of the imagination - they were actually there!

Please note that the two routines contained in this ebook were originally available in a compilation entitled Five Fickle Fingers of Fate, which is no longer available.

1st edition 2009; 12 pages.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Psychic cludo 1 for the workings, very simple, even the small amount of memory work has been made easy, but this will need a willingness to build up the drama to get the most out of it.

The Whitechapel Messiah
2 at most. A few basic moves to cover, but ideally this is going to be performed in low lighting for atmoshere, so that would give you cover.

Review

Two nice effects from Paul at a bargain price. I haven't performed them yet, but after a few read throughs these look like two good enteratining routines. The Whitechapel Messiah I don't think is exactly suited to my style, but it is a nice effect. A card trick which will take them on a trip back in time leaving them with a souveneir from the past. I can see this being good in the right hands, but it just doesn't fit into my current routine.

Psychic cludo I really like. It ticks many boxes of things I like. The workings are simple. Paul has thought it through so there isn't much to be remembered. It will engage a good number of people in the audience. Mainly it strikes me as being a trick which should entertain.

In a close up or parlour situation it will get many people involved. Maximum participation and entertainment. It is a murder theme, but as it uses cludo and engages the audience it could be a light-hearted piece or a nice introduction to some darker pieces. It strikes me as a good entertaining prediction routine.

Overall

8/10
Two good routines. I can see both getting used at some point. Psychic cludo more than the Whitechapel Messiah. For the price they are very good. A few extras will need to be bought, but I imagine most of the people on here would have most.

Thanks for the review Jobasha! Gosh, these two routines are from several years ago now and were my first ever foray into the world of published routines. In fact I came up with these routines during a joint enterprise with Iain, and they originally came to light in a now unavailable ebook called the Five Fickle Fingers of Fate.

I have a soft spot for both these routines - Psychic Cluedo can be played as dark or as light as you want. It would equally fit in with a dark Bizarre presentation as well as a fun routine for all the family.

Whitechapel Messiah is an altogether darker beast that still exists in a mutated and ungimmicked form in the Jack the Ripper seance. It's now stripped down to its bare bones, the trickery is taken away, and it's some freaky sh*t!

They are both lovely effects and play out really well, although the Whitechapel Messiah is a little too dark for me.
