Right, i went to staples last saturday in leeds and i managed to get the very last 12 pack of old style sharpies in store! there was millions of the new ones (BAH HUMBUG!) but i managed to find the old ones! Then i went and got 24 packs of bikes from costco, after being refused entry because i was under 18, so i went to a friend, who is a member, and i got to walk past the guard who wouldnt let me in with someone who could go in!

What a day that was!

I always find that when doing a signed card routine then the thicker the tip of the marker pen, the better.

Although it's personal choice, I've found that medium tips don't sign too much of the surface and also, if doing a torn are restored card routine then the thicker signatures will match up much better, in my opinion.

I love sharpies and Sharpie magic. ANybody know of any books just on sharpie magic? I know, I know, it would be silly to do a show just with sharpies.

They are just great items to hide gimmicks in. Everyone trusts a sharpie.

If it's a plain permanent marker that you're after then Asda are selling a twin pack at 77p - excellent value.

I bought a pack today and the ink is instant dry without any smudge at all which makes them ideal for signed card effects. It's a thick tip with a cut edge so that you can write in smaller / thinner using the edge if you wish.

I think it is a little like the bike cards situation. I understand that sharpies are the major brand of markers available in the states, hence the gimmicked ones are made in sharpie so if you want to use gimmicked pens you need sharpies. They are good quality and consistant though.

I disagree with some of this...........

If you are using a gimmicked sharpie then I agree that consistency is needed and a switch with a non gimmicked one is a must. However, if you're not using gimmicked sharpies and only need a means to sign a name or mark a card then IMHO the brand of marker is totally irrelevant.

However, when it comes to Bike's it's a different matter and I don't believe that the comparrison between needing to use bikes and needing to use a sharpie works. The need for a precision card with a consistent feel and manufacturing process is much more of an important factor and bike's cut it in most people's eyes (including mine).

I watched a magician do a signed card routine a few days ago and the first thing that I noticed other than the use of Bikes was that he pulled a sharpie out of his pocket. No one else noticed this and he placed it right back in his pocket and used it for no other part of the routine. What was the benefit in using a more expensive sharpie?

Realising that the sharpies sold in my local 'partners' shop were different I decided that I would purchase two and see what I could do.

And this is what I did:

1. I purhcased two magetic pick-up tools (look like aerials with a magnet on the end) - I used 2lb version which cost 75 p each.

2. I separated the pointy (black) end from the grey and then cut the ink tube off so that it was just shorter than the black bit itself.

3. I used a small plastic cap, the diameter of the black bit and then poured a little epoxy resin (araldite, lock tight, etc.) to seal that.

4. A magnet was inserted into the black end (flush with the end and more epoxy poured in.

5. I filled the grey end with foam which was capped with some more epoxy and finished off with another magnet in the end (NOTE. Make sure you have the polarities right or else you will have an amazing separating sharpie :-) ).

6. The whole shooting works is finished by adding a shim of thin (black - paint it if you need to) pastic and trimmed. When together you can't tell the difference. The magnets are so strong they can stand casual examination - and both pens works.

Of course you have to do the work yourself and you could get ink on your fingers and the whole thing cost me £8. 50 to do (I had the epoxy resin lying around so haven't ibcluded this in the cost) so it's not all bright and sunny ;-)

Perhaps I should add that this has also been tried on three other makes of pen (fibre, gel and ball-point) and each attempt works and writes and is indistinguishable from from the real thing to the casual observer (in fact the magnets strong enough that I've written with one and not realised that it was hte gimmicked one).

This means that you're not restricted to any make - magicians might notice a sharpie, but nobody has sussed my staedler white board pen!

Have fun, get messy and make the magic yours!

Does anyone know if the newer gimmicked Sharpies are to the new design (papermate) or if they still the original.

Cheers

All those I've seen are the older design, this includes a shipment in London which was being opened that day.

That's why I mod the new ones as the odler style are too sussy!,

Just thought I'd let you know, Costco in the UK are doing a pack of 20 traditional US Black Sharpies - the ones made by Sandford, not Papermate - in the old light grey body style and they cost just £4.99 plus VAT. Less than 30p each. And there's an additional bonus metallic silver one thrown in as a freebie!

Sharpies - now in mini size

Postby Templer » Jul 14th, '06, 15:47

On the subject of Sharpies have you all seen the new mini sharpies? These come in a wide range of colours and your regular black. Fitting perfectly into your Jerry O'Connell leather card case, along side your favourite deck.
I have recently received delivery of four and I have to say they are incredibly cute!!!!

There is (i believe) only one supplier in the UK at the moment and they are at www.themagiccompany.co.uk

Very fast delivery
