Buying Coins

Postby DenmarkKilo » Jul 22nd, '10, 09:10

This may seem like a pretty stupid question, but after seeing Ponta the Smith at EMC, I feel I should ask...

What is the easiest way to get half dollar or dollar coins?

Yes, it seems a simple enough question being asked by someone that should know better, but it's tricky.
I could head to the local post office's money changing counter, but it's unlikely they will have $1 coins, and asking for specific denominations would be nigh on impossible. I'm also sure I've seen coin sets that if I remember correctly would be charging £12 for $4, which for ungaffed coins is a bit of a bad exchange rate...

Any ideas?

(Reason for this - I am practicing with £2 coins, due to my large hands, and I keep on spending the damned props!)

ebay... you can get job lots of old coins quite often.

though personaly i prefer Mardigras tokens, and Half Crowns to U.S Coins.

Since your going to be using something that's unlike any coins you find in your pocket, why not use something completely different?

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Try ebay, I don't know what it's like for dollars but there are often job lots of coins going for silly prices. If you keep an eye open you can often find something that you want.

I have the cheap and nasty poker chips in abundance, but they're very light, probably too light.

I have managed to work out a work-around. The 5 Kronor coin is similar to the £2. A tiny bit thinner, a bit lighter, and a family member is coming back from Sweden in a week, so i can put a request in there.

The Search function will show several previous threads on this topic which may be of help. Dollar and half dollar coins are still widely used in Las Vegas but you'd need to go there to get 'em  !

Ebay will get you some, but can be pricey as people put on collectable dollars. I buy quite a lot looking for specific dates. Another option is magicbox are now stocking half dollars. I'm sure there were some dollars, but can't spot them at the moment.

Any local magic shop should have them in stock. I personally buy them wholesale from Murphys in America. (saying that I need to order some as I haven't any  )

How many do you need? I used to work in a bank and we got tones of them in. I can still see if I know anybody at the bank. Seeing as I'm in America they cost 50 cents each and a dollar is doller each, some folks don't realize that they are still currency and still used in many places here. I have no idea what it would cost to send them out to you but we could always figure it out.
