The Hawk 2.0 by Alexander Kolle (DVD + Gimmick)

The Effect
What they say:
Make your ambitious card routine go through the roof!

Imagine you're in a movie theater munching pop corn and raisinets...and the guy in the movie performs an utterly impossible magic effect...one of those "written for the movies" moments that you know could never exist in the real world.

Introducing Hawk 2.0

The Real Deal

Watch the movie

Yes, it's all true!

This can be the finale of your normal ambitious card routine, or a stand alone big-build-up show stopper.

Anyone signs both sides of any card (from a normal deck) You insert the signed card into the center of the deck...which you place on the floor (or hold in one hand.) Everyone stares at the top of the deck on the floor. The suspense builds...then in full view with no cover...and without anyone touching the deck...the signed card miraculously appears on top! You immediately turn the card over to show the other signature, then toss out the card to the astonished crowd.

Let's be clear here. Nothing is touching the deck when the effect happens. The deck is sitting by itself on the floor...surrounded by space. A few seconds go by ...and then the signed card literally poofs into existence on top of the deck...it visibly appears out of nowhere, just like an impossible fantasy effect in the movies!

You can fly your Hawk even higher by placing a borrowed coin (can be signed) on top of the deck. Under these test conditions the signed card still twinkles into view on top of the deck...and is still under the coin! The coin never ever moves. And again this can happen without you ever touching the deck. Only one coin is used and can be immediately returned to its owner.

And there's yet another Hawk 2.0 upgrade: the PH inspired Lucky card gimmick. This bonus gimmick lets you start and finish clean with zero sleight of hand.

* Use a normal deck
* Perform with deck on the floor or in your hand
* Includes Alex's 2.0 coin convincer - the Stealth Hawk
* Resets from zero to five seconds depending on the routine
* Two different custom-made gimmicks
* Gimmicks can be used hundreds of times when handled with care
* Includes enough extra goodies to make at least 12 more gimmicks.

Cost
£33.99 from Dudethatscoolmagic

(I was lucky enough to get mine from £13 from a chap of an auction site)

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

I'd say a 3/4 depending on how you do it.

Review
Ok so i received this 2 days ago. i was so excited the night before i struggled to sleep and it had been racking my brains for ages. 'how' was the main question. i gave in and bought it. and what an effect! - Woah!

I think it's fantastic. the first thing i did was look at the gimmick and i thought 'how the hell does that make the card appear on top?!' it was only until i watched the DVD (which ill move on to in a moment) that i realized - how easy, but so Very very clever.

The gimmick is absolute genius, very very clever, easy to use and despite the hearsay not hard to bring in or ditch after. They give you 4 or 5 options on how to lose the gimmick once the trick is complete.

the gimmick is very strong and if you look after it should last a very long time. It comes with spare stuff for repairs / making your own, plus a second bonus gimmick which is wonderful. a whole second trick!

kobain wrote:Can you please mention about the limitations on angles? what happens if once you set the deck, someone walks in the room behind the intended performance angle??

moving on to angles and distance - this is the VERY SLIGHT let down. You do need to be some distance away, id say a meter at least and you can only have people infront of the deck (within about 180 degrees). If somebody walks in the 'room' behind the intended performance angle then i still don't think they will be able to see exactly how it works - its too quick. plus they would have missed the whole trick and probably not know whats going on and so they wont really be looking too hard.

You can perform this in your hand (but again from a distance) which i really like because you can control when the card Jumps to the top. when it is on the floor you cannot, you have to wait. but that is only minor niggles.

there is a little bit of a set up before hand (Takes less than a minute) but again i think its still worth it for the effect.

The effect outweighs all of the con's by far. it is SO visual. SO quick and fantastic. it doesn't get much more visual than this - I'm sure!

The DVD:

Yes - Very good indeed. Really well made, good quality. Slow, teaches step by step. everything is explain in great details so you know exactly why the gimmick is made how its made, and how it works, and the best ways to use it.

some suggestions on there for a couple of other tricks too!

the main trick itself does use a couple of slights but these are VERY simple (Without going into too much detail) there is a second performance option as an extra convincer that uses a slightly harder slight but you can pass on this option if you like.

On this he also shows you how to do 'the stealth hawk' the same effect but with a signed coin on the top of the deck - this blew my mind!

Overall

If you have £30 spare, want something super SUPER visual - then buy this.

A little practice and this will work wonders for any Magi with a good ambitious card routine.

I really recommend this, and taking into consideration the Angles, distance and 'slights' (If thats what you can call them) i give this a..

9/10

Hope this helps any of the undecided folk out there.
If you have any questions fire them my way and ill be sure to give the best answer i can :)

cheers,

J

Thanks for the great review.

2 questions, firstly:
magicj wrote:moving on to angles and distance - this is the VERY SLIGHT let down. You do need to be some distance away, id say a meter at least and you can only have people infront of the deck (within about 180 degrees).
...... could I do this with the audience on the same side of the deck of cards as me?? For example, could I place the deck on the table, in front of me and the audience (with the audience at a suitable distance away), then stand back and all watch from the same angle - if you catch my drift??

..... and 2nd - will this work with any kind of cards, or do I need a specific kind such as bikes, etc??

If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Moonbeam.

1) Yes, they actually need to be the same side as you. not too recommended on a table because; the lower it is, the more impressive it looks.

and 2) yes, you do need a set Bikes in the matching colour to the gimmick. My gimmick is red but i cant say for sure if they all are!

hope this helps?

...... so a low barstool then maybe?? I'm just applying this to my style cos it just wouldn't work with me in my local on the floor.

My bikes are blue and so are all my matching gimmick cards (apart from the ones that need to be the opposite colour) - don't really fancy having to buy red bikes just for one trick - I'm hoping this is available in blue 'cos I'm getting tempted  .

I love my ambitious card routines, been doing them since i started in magic.
Does anyone else feel they're already doing this trick but on a person's hand?
Help me get to Blackpool 2012 please?

I know what you mean but this is an effect that has impact and a real WOW factor.

I guess that it is just evolution and god knows what the next ending to ambitious will be?!

I would've thought having this happen on the spectators hand would have more of a WOW factor than you putting the deck on the floor lining up your audience and then it happening.
Each to their own though ey?

Maybe if I remarket the standard on hand routine but put an X and some numbers in the title it will sell....

Your foot note mad eme spit my beer

I guess its the new breed of magician relying more heavily on gimmicks instead of skill. (people such as myself but my presentation and patter is pretty strong lol)

On the plus side you get LOADS of stuff to replace it if it does break.

This looks incredible, and what a great review.

You say that you need to use this with a deck of matching Bikes, but do you really ABSOLUTELY need it or can you get around this problem with a little work?

Put it this way. With Extractor, you need to use poker sized bikes. Well, I've managed to adapt my Extractor so it uses narrow (Bridge) sized Bee cards. It took me about a day, but I did it!

Can you adapt this for, say, narrow Bee cards, if you're good at fiddling with stuff? i.e. can you remake whatever the gimmick is yourself?

(If not, I'm switching back to Bikes!)

Oh, I have a second question!

I hope someone will still answer the first too.

If you can answer this without giving away the secret: do you have to have anything bulky in your pockets? My pockets are already all catered for. What I mean is, is there anything in your pockets while the effect is actually happening, or is everything there no the floor (or in your hand)?

there is nothing in your pockets, no electronics etc....but if I'm being honest i thought the whole thing was awful and quite unusable as a worker....worst money i've spent in ages!

I was very excited when I first saw it but am now beginning to think it is likely that it is likely to be -- as you say -- unusuable in so many situations that it is not worthwhile.

I am thinking that the problems are both angels and quite likely setup?

But, I haven't seen the product, I'm just going by things that other people have said!

Maybe someone who has it will convince me/others that it is in fact worthwhile!?
