Why does anyone kiss anything?

Sounds like a Howard Jones lyric.

They've spent so long rehearsing that their human relationships have deteriorated to the point where the unreciprocated gesture of kissing an animal is as close to affection as they can get?

Well they are hardly exchanging bodily fluids are they!

The reason the Magician kisses the dove before putting it in the cage is to show to the audience he loves his little lovey dovey and that it isn't cruel in anyway. This is I am sure something Dove magicians have to be a lot more aware of than they ever used to be.

Possibly it also helps to calm the Dove down and stops them flapping around like a mad bird once put in said cage...

A couple of theories at least...

They are not kissing the doves.... they bite one eye out which disorientates them and stops them trying to fly off.... Do I have to explain everything!

Probably better/less weird that it's a kiss and not a lick.

Probably, they are kissing them goodbye, because they know, deep down inside it is going to happen. They are going to vanish a live dove and produce a dead one.
