As a side note, I've only just realised that I know the guy whose effect this is, myself and Gary Jones have sesioned with him a few times and he is a great magician, he caught me loads of times with his coin magic.

I didn't know it was the same guy until earlier tonight.

If you need a reason to justify a prop then certainly a bit of thought is required beforehand. Lighters aren't just for smokers - lighting candles, destroying written notes, photos or flash paper are other uses. The 'Zippo' style is a relatively old design so perhaps the item could be something handed down from a few years ago - anyone else remember the running gag in 'Grease' involving the OTT mass of flames from a lighter? OK, that's back to smoking but you know what I mean! Incidentally, the lighter was invented before the match so that might be another aspect to bring into play.

Why are people thinking that you need to smoke, in order to carry a lighter around?

If you were to apply this logic to everything we have in our pockets you might as well say that there is no point carying around a deck of cards, unless you are looking for a poker game.

Magician's guilt is being bought into play. Many , many people cary around obscure things as a lucky piece.. Tons of people cary a zippo believe it or not.
:)
Time and time again in magic, you have to build logic into why your in possetion of something. The best logic, is in treating that item in as noting special.
You have the lighter on you to light the candle, or to burn the billet, or to light someone elses ciggy... because thats what normal people do.

or you cary a lighter because it was once your grandads, or your uncles, or once used by James Dean, or because you do lighter tricks..( search google there are tons of sites devoted to zippo juggling believe it or not)

bottom line is, if it's not for you.. fine.

But an item like this has more going for it than i think you realise.

and.. its not often i enthuse about something like Im enthusing about this... so that alone should tell you that it has potential.

if you had a lighter that was once owned by James dean why would you carry it around with you?

Magicians are expected to carry cards with them. I just think that carrying a prop that has no use out side its magical needs consumes pocket space and looks odd.

I am master of misdirection, look over there.

We are not falling out young Welshy, we are debating, I think farlsy is an idiot he thinks I am one. We are just talking about who is the bigger idiot.
