In 1944 Dunninger, the great mentalist, went backstage in a Chicago Theatre to see Blackstone.. During the meeting Blackstone couldn't find his white tie. Turning to Dunniger he said "You are a Mentalist. Find my white tie or I shall have to wear a black one."

To which Dunniger replied, "You are a Magician. Change the black tie to a white one!"

Magic is something that has no logical explanation and no rationalised explanation is satisfied.

Michael Close (although I belive that he was quoting from someone else. Anyone know who?)

There is a difference between someone not knowing how a trick is done and someone knowing that it can't be done...

Simon Aronson.

There may be 25 ways to vanish a ball, but the audience see one thing - the ball vanishes.

The following quotes are from the book Reputation Makers by Harry Lorayne (a very good book, but not for the beginner).

“When I have a choice I’d always use a subtlety rather than a sleight, if it serves the same purpose.”

“Never use a look-what-I-can-do-that-you-can’t attitude when working for laymen. If you do, even if everything you do completely fools them, they won’t like you.”

“Quite frankly, I believe that if you can do one good card control, one good palm, and one good double-lift (in that order), you can do miracles for laymen.”

“When a sleight is executed in such a way that the spectators know (or feel) that something has happened, even if they don’t know exactly what, you’re not really fooling them.”

I first heard this quote from Doc Eason. I've since found who the originator was, but, unfortunately don't recall....Sorry!

"Don't run if you're not being chased."

Which means that you shouldn't try to prove you're not doing anything "tricky" if you're not suspected of such a thing e.g. if you're concealing a coin and nobody suspects it, don't try to forcefully show your hand empty (refer to Lorrayne's quote, "When I have a choice I’d always use a subtlety rather than a sleight, if it serves the same purpose" above).

Mike.

Another quote (piece of advice) from Harry Lorayne (same book).

“When practising a sleight, do the action without doing the move; then work at making the sleight look just that way. Quite often it’s possible to help toward that end by including the ‘sleightless’ action in the routine before the sleight is actually executed.”

Excellent advice.

Another quote from Doc Eason

“Lead them down the garden path, and then turn the hoses on them.”
