A response to a thread about Kenton Kneppers concerns

Postby Gochos The Greek » Jul 19th, '04, 20:47

This is from a the thread on Magic Bunny about Kenton Kneppers concerns on illegal downlaoding and copies of other poeples materials

http://www.magicbunny.co.uk/phpBB2/view ... highlight=

I agree totally with all the comments above. We must do something about it.

Our industry, our hobby, our profession, is nowhere near as huge as the movie and music industry, and is unlikely to ever be as huge, or as popular. We can stop all this download of magic material. How? By forming a coalition. We need to start taking people to court. Form a committee that will be responsible for this. Have a fund that supporters can put money into. This CAN BE achieved. We need to stop this before it really gets out of hand. Our problem is not huge compared to the movie and music problem. If we sit down and only talk about it, and take no action, what’s the point of loving our art so much?

THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE WITH OUR ART COMPARED TO THE MOVIE AND MUSIC ILLEGAL DOWNLOAD PROBLEM.

With our art we are all creators. We are a small community. We are all friends. What other industry do you know of that can go to a convention and have a drink with the best in the business? Few of us can go to a conference and sit down with Michael Jackson, Madonna, Sylvester Stallone. Many of us can go to a convention and have a drink with Banacheck, Daryl, David Copperfield.

It is easier to stop this problem happening with our art, if we really want it to. We can easily find out who is in charge of a download site, because the community is so small. We can then gather evidence and start legal proceedings.

I will stop here, because I am starting to talk too much. I am willing to start a group. Anyone that is interested please don’t hesitate to PM me. I am sure there are people that want to stop this problem. Join me and help in the cause.

Anyone know how to contact Kenton Knepper? The majority of people wouldn’t have a clue were to start. People in the know, lets help them.

The reason for this post was to further the cause even further. Their is no point in just talking about it, what is that going to achieve?

So a group of us have decided to set up a Group to try and combat this problem. More details will follow. Anyone wishing to participate, please dont hesitate to PM me.

No worries about that, our intention was to

a) Illustrate why Talkmagic won't allow certain items to be included in the For Sale section and any references to other suspect sources, auctions, copies on e-bay etc are viewed with great suspicion. Then deleted! As you can probably guess the Moderators here get a lot of unnecessary grief from some folks in this respect and we really don't need it.

b) Make folks aware that someone well known and respected in the world of Magic has spoken out and is proposing to withdraw a lot of his material. In fact, he later confirmed to me that he may give things another chance so all is not doom and despair but we reckon this is as far as it goes.

c) To contact Kenton is easy enough - his e-mail details are available at Online Visions but whether he replies is a another matter - he's previously stated that he's had enough of flamings and nasty messages from ill-informed amateurs so usually doesn't reply to messages. This is why we were so chuffed that not only did he reply, he agreed that we could reproduce his article in full as mentioned.

d) As well as being very keen amateurs, we also have members who are professionals and others who are releasing new and original material commercially - none of us want to see such work ripped off in this manner.

The Talkmagic Forum as such is right behind any initiative which makes life difficult for folks dealing in illicit and illegal copies - please let us have the details of your proposals and we'll make sure they are well posted and well circulated!

Yes, I would also be interested in hearing your proposals.

Personally, my own experience of trying to stop this sort of thing has only shown me how stubborn and ignorant the people doing it are.

I think that you are right that the only way to deal with this is through group solidarity.

All the best,
