Patrick Kuffs - Mind Stunts

Postby phillipnorthfield » Sep 24th, '10, 11:06

The Effect + What they say

An insanely dynamic entertainer and innovator, Patrik Kuffs has made smash-hit appearances at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, the International Battle of Magicians in Atlanta, and on such varied television shows as Popular Mechanics For Kids, Ad Lib and Urban Magic, with David Acer and Richard Sanders.

On Mind Stunts 1, Partik Kuffs™s first DVD, we take a tour of Kuffs own mind. This DVD is not only a valuable teaching toll but also a highly entertaining show within a show. This is a DVD unlike any other. Great magic, great production value all wrapped up in the Kuffs Trademark humour that really set it apart from the rest. You will learn some of Patrik's most acclaimed and requested effects:

Dangerous Monte: The classic Russian roulette gets the Kuffs treatment in this 100% safe version. The performer displays several paper bags. A random spectator selects bags one at a time for the performer to slam his hand down onto crushing the bag until only one remains. This bag is lifted to reveal a Sharpe jagged broken bottle.A show stopping routine version of Russian roulette with none of the danger.

Watchism: Patrik's personal method for forcing a time on a borrowed watch with no extra props or strange procedure. This is really a clean and straightforward method that creates a very strong impression. The spectators select a time and the performer has predicted it! Simple as that! Strong, pure and easy mentalism at its best.

Book Test 4 Dummies: The performer has a spectator think of a word from any borrowed unprepared book. Despite the very fair procedure the performer instantly reveals the thought of word. Use any book, any time with any one. Whether you perform this is your local bookstore or on the biggest stage this is hard hitting mentalism you are going to love.

Blindfoil: Patrik Kuffs personal take on the classic blindfold effect with one major difference! The performer has heavy silver foil placed over his eyes. Despite this the performer is still able to get a straight-ahead peek. Perfect for a blindfold drive or even a classic performance of the blindfold theme. This is so clever you wont believe the method!

T.O.C.: Patrik's Tossed Out Cube an interesting effect making use of a Rubix cube made up of playing cards. The cube is thrown around the audience who are asked to mix the cube and then to think of one card from the cubes squares. Despite the fairness of this the performer is able to reveal multiple thoughts from your audience. All with no pre-show and with nothing written down.

Bold Business: The performer and spectator each make drawings on the back of a business card. Amazingly they match! A classic of mentalism redefined with a simple, bold and easy method. This is a great way of getting your business card in your client’s hands with a strong, hard hitting and amazing drawing duplication.

This DVD includes the necessary stickers for the "Rubik's Cube" effect.

Most of the routines, and ideas on here are boldly easy, almost ANYBODY can do them, you do need a little nerve on some of the routines however, as someone may be pron to knowing how it is done without trying to figure it out. In that I mean the method is based on the majority of people not knowing something rather than standard magicians techniques. As such a lot of these routines are Magician foolers, and BlindFoil had me completely stumped with me assuming it was a gimmicked piece of foil (It isn't!) In terms of difficulty, this DVD has to be a 1 or at the very most a 2. Watchism is fairly difficult to get the hang of and so that routine alone is probably a 4/5, but it is impromptu anytime, anywhere and a great climax to PK time, or Osterlinds Watch Routine.

Review

Dangerous Monte: This is just plain devious, so simple, and direct, there is absolutely NO WAY layman can figure this out. In the DVD he performs it using cards, which made me think they were marked and he used some sort of Equivoque. It doesn't, in my opinion the cards detract from the effect hugely, as they can just NAME, ANY bag and it contains the broken bottle. The method is simple and brilliant, yet expensive, but will last a lifetime, but most people will have 1 or 2 things lying around their houses anyway. Great routine 5/5

Watchism: This was bold, mostly because it doesn't have an out if you miss. And a lot of the time starting out, you will miss, trust me on this in which case you look a bit like a plonker. :( . Once you get the hang of it however you will be getting close 5-10 minutes out. This is great to do after PK time, where they ask if they can see the time change. Theres a nice little sleight taught afterwards as a convincer which I found more useful than the routine itself. 3/5 4 if it hits!

Book Test 4 Dummies: I'll be honest here, I didn't like this one, the idea is sound, but the method was a little weak in my opinion, I'll stick with Marc Paul's AAA Booktest which can achieve the exact same effect without Kuff's additional 'move' 2/5

Blindfoil: This is great and you can do it straight away. This fools everybody and is so simple to do. No nose peeks or anything else, and yet you still have PERFECT straight ahead vision. You can also wear glasses over the top and as Kuff's proves not look like an *rse. :P

T.O.C.: Being a veteran of Mark Elsdon's Rubik Remembered I spotted the method for this immediately, and was a little dissapointed in how it was set up. (If anyone wants a way to do this with 3/4 people then PM me). I also thought that it most definitely wouldn't fly past anyone... I was soooo wrong. No-one spots it at all! I have made a few changes to the routine, but the basic method is fool-proof and impossible to work out!.
Imagine a TOD, where all the cards are different! 5/5

Bold Business: I don't have business cards so have been unable to try this out. However speaking from a card handlers point of view this should work fine, it is one of the better and simpler Drawing Dupications I have seen. My only gripe is that the turnover pass is not taught on the DVD which is something that people may not be familiar with. 4/5

Overall

This is a great DVD, I have intentially not gone into the presentation and style so that you can enjoy it for yourself, but I will say this is a Magic DVD that is actually entertaining, and the more I see Kuff's perform, the more and more I think he has based his character on Dr Evil from Austin Powers! This is a great DVD and you should pick it up just to do the T.O.C which can imediately replace your T.O.D routine which nearly everyone else does.

9/10

Fantastic DVD
