External Links Section anyone?

Postby Archie » Jul 20th, '04, 16:46

I was wondering if a links section would be off use? I have seen some very interesting links put into various threads but there is no where specific for say a playing card retailers link to be listed etc

Obviously a Links Thread could be created in the Miscellaneous Section but I would favour a Links Section. Naturally with an advisor that this was linking to external sites which are not under the control of TalkMagic's moderators.

Actually there's already something similar to this in the restricted area (Basement Archives) already.

Goldfish I can understand certain links being kept for the reserved area but I would have thought that a links section would be of use not only to regular forum members without special access and also might generate some through traffic from the net which is turn might generate more members.

Are there any technical reasons which make it difficult to add in?

Hi Archie, it's a good suggestion. I will discuss it with the other mods.

Incidentally I don't think goldfish was defending the fact that the links are in the restricted basement area, just mentioning that that is where they are.

The thinking behind them being there is that some of the links are to what some may consider exposure sites, but certainly the vast majority are just useful general links. I'll see what everyone else thinks.

thanks for the idea.

Bananafish - no I understood absolutely and I meant no offense to Goldfish (banana...gold...FISH?!...anyway...) some links should be kept secret to help preserve appropriate secrets.

I have say as an aside that I find it rather neat that various magic sites I have been to demand that you prove some knowledge of magic before opening the doors fully (this forum included) it had never really hit me before that such a level of discretion would be necessary but of course if everyone knew how we did things they wouldn't be so impressed.

This may sound funky, but you should definitley have a link page open to everyone. These links should contain links to other websites like this. That way people can get most out of the internet. Talk Magic should not be competing with other magic forums, it should be helping magicians perfect the art.

Great thoughts but one of the main problems with a links page is that it has to be moderated very carefully to avoid having inappropriate links posted there. On one Forum I checked out last year, many of the 'magic website links' were actually to porn sites so that links section was being discontinued. As mentioned above, a lot of other sites are openly exposing secrets which will ultimately lead to a complete lack of confidence by the inventors and innovators in publishing or distributing magical routines - it's their way of earning a living and it's not right for others to copy and feely distribute such material. As we can't be on watch 24 hours a day, we can't guarantee that inappropriate links wouldn't be posted so, at the moment, the links page is still a good idea waiting for the right time to happen.

Actually, TM doesn't set out to compete with any other forum, we know we're one of the smaller ones around so we just try to provide one way of talking about magic which we feel comfortable with and we leave the others to do it their way!

perhaps the links could by submited then checked before being posted that way not so good ones could be discarded and the others could be sectioned as mages only and general.
i know this would meen someone spending long nights sorting the links, perhaps someone who is already around at night and has a lot more time on there hands, say someone who is ill at the moment
