But in a show where two acts fooled P&T with one (Farqhaur) leaving Penn entirely baffled, apparently it was this one which was "the most stunning climax to a trick ever seen on television"

That last effect certainly did contain a cunning stunt.

Ha! Love the Maidenhead article. I'm quite sure only one sentence in it is factually accurate - unless he lies about his age too!!

I enjoyed Shawn's trick. Very clever and I wasn't at all surprised it fooled Penn and Teller.

Etienne didn't really do it for me, if I am honest. It all seemed a bit too quick (possibly the editing, but I suspect not) and a bit, well, "bitty". As with Mathieu Bich, there was something very obvious that didn't seem to fall under suspicion at all. I am sure that, if Iain watched it, he would have thought the same as me.

Presentation-wise, I really liked "Manuel", the Cuban from Mexico. I liked his patter and found him the most engaging performer in that show. Shame his trick got completely revealed. I cannot say that I was remotely bothered that it relied on gimmicks.

While I knew what was coming with Chris, I enjoyed the fact that he'd done something very different, and had tried to put a new spin on fooling P&T and was using the surroundings to his advantage. It didn't entirely work, but it was good to see something new.

The guy who created the effect wasn't happy about his effect being exposed without his permission (well, depending what you mean by it) there was a thread about it on that funny green place...

Etienne's was about 12 minutes long originally. He was also the second least entertaining on the night of the 5/6, according to the laypeople I was with

Are you able to point me in the direction of the thread? There seem to be an awful lot about the series, and I began to lose the will to live after the first three. Just some useful words to Google will be fine, as I think links there don't work too well.

Ugh, really? (The 12 minutes thing, the other bit I can believe.)

He was probably the most controversial winner. He did about 30 odd card effects, productions of wine, etc. P&T said "we know how you did this...we know how you did this...we know how you did this...we know how you did this..." before Etienne latched onto the one thing that P&T couldn't figure out.

Really? Wow, so pretty much can boil the entire show for next season down to "perform 30 odd effects and hope one of them fools them."
By that logic you would think Mike Vincent deserved to win because they couldn't accutely identify each particular sleight.

The thread's called "P&T exposed me against my will" (I don't think he's even being funny...) http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view ... =15&305213

He gave the TV performance rights away with the sale, so there's no real legal problem...

Wow, there's more bile on that forum about the show than here. I have to admit though that I just assumed everyone on the show was performing their own work.

When he did that on TV, it came across a bit suspicious (like he had two tricks, but was only pushing the one they weren't sure about), but funny all the same. If he had that many tricks, that's poor form. Like bringing a chaingun to a grouse shoot.

I agree, but I sympathise with the view that spoiling a trick for other people who've purchased it is a bit off, especially if you do it by constantly challenging Penn and Teller to say exactly what was done.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. It's always nice to have a reminder of why I hardly ever go to the Café.

Oh yeah, I can totally sympathise. I would have thought the nature of the show would have encouraged people to come on with original effects, but it doesn't seem to have been the case. How much credit can the performer really take if he fools p+t using someone else's effect? Hmmmm...

As for the cafe, every now and then I think i should sign up, but it doesn't take long to remember why I never have...
