ICandy - Lee Smith & Gary Jones - Review

Postby magicamit » Feb 23rd, '11, 22:16

I would just like to Congratulate Lee, Gary and Russ for the ICandy DVD. Even though Lee, Gary and Russ are all very good friends of mine I am going to review this from a workers point of view.

So I got home from Blackpool and the first thing I decided to do was to watch the ICandy DVD. First very small minor point which I noticed was that they "play all button" didn't work, not a big deal at all as you can just press the chapters button. I would also like to point out that i spoke to Lee the following day about it to see if he noticed it and genuinely he didn't no nothing about it.

(1)Scoop - I love this routine, for any workers out there that do a Anniversary Waltz effect this is such a lovely visually way to do it.

(2)Coins/Ring Purse - I personally don't do Coin/Ring magic, reason being I can't do coin magic. But Gary has shown us something which is a lovely quick and easy routine for any walkaround situation. For someone like me who doesn't do coin magic this is something which i would keep in my case and use.

(3)T.N.T - This is Lee's version of torn and restored card using a prediction. There is a lot of magic going on here in a short space of time. I totally agree with what Lee & Gary mentioned on the DVD, this routine creates a moment for the spectators.

(4)No Sleep - I love this. This is such a lovely way of doing a transpositions effect. I must say it did fool me the first time i watched Gary performance, its so quick and visual.

(5) Eyefone 10 - Personally for me the best trick on the DVD and worth the whole DVD. I spoke to Lee for an hour the following day about Eyefone 10 and what can be achieved with it. Wayne Dobson did a lecture in Blackpool this year and the most important thing which I took away from his lecture was that you can take a simply routine and play it out as much you want. With Eyefone 10 you can do this. I have nothing else to say except BRILLIANT. Btw the papers you need for this are easy to pick up and print yourself.

(6) 3C - This is Gary's coin routine, not something which I would personally do myself as I cant do coin magic. But anyone who does do coin magic it really is a nice coin routine. This makes me want to start coin magic.

(7) Kick Back Kings - This is another transposition effect on the DVD. Once again a great quick walk around effect which suits my performance style. This is completely different to Gary's no sleep effect but both equally great in their own rights.

(8) No Palm Coins through table - I loved watching the explanation of this effect it really was fun to watch. It does what it says on the tin.

There are a few more effects on the DVD left, but I just wanted to give my two cents. This really is a fantastic DVD and there is something on there for everyone to take away. I would like to stress the point that I am not writing this because Lee & Gary are my friends I am writing this because it is a great DVD and product. You both make a great team and Russ top notch on quality.

No Palm Coin Thru Table is utter utter genius. Basically a SELF-WORKING way to get four coins to visibly travel through a table or even through the spectator's hands! It sounds impossible but when you see how Gary does it you'll realise it is completely brilliant - after you've stopped laughing at the audacity of it all!

Gary I salute you for bringing such a great routine to (and thru) the table (and hope to see you on 2nd March for the meet).

I bought this (not from Blackpool as I couldn't make it) and it came in the post this morning. Have watched and tried a couple of the effects and they're fantastic!! Can't wait to perform them!

I recieved this yesterday and got to watch it last night (starting about midnight, so didnt get through too much before I fell asleep!)
I noticed too about the play button. But as said, if you play it from the beggining in the chapters, it will just play it all anyway. No problem.

I was really impressed with what I saw, and found that having the two of you, working off each other, dropping in things that one may do but the other may not, was so much better than just one person.

Each one (of what I saw) had a real life performance before the given explanation, which was very well done and explained thoroughly.

I love the eyefone (ifone), but before I fell asleep, I skipped through the chapters, and decided to play the very last chapter; which was 'Pocket 2 Pocket 2 Pocket'...and just...wow! This I am sure, will be my trick of the dvd, and well worth the £20 on its own! I cannot wait to learn it and perform it!

Very well done to both of you, Lee and Gary.

(I love your palming Lee, and will have to learn that too at some point!)

Thank you, Pocket 2 Pocket 2 Pocket has been with me for many years now in one way or another. For me it's about playing with the audience, you lead them up the garden path and then hit them time and time again, gotta be done lol!

I really enjoyed doing this project with Lee, he's a real star and one heck of a great guy.

Thanks for all the great feedback, it really is appreciated.

Haha Mike, it really is cheeky!! This is in my old lecture notes, in print it's hard to visualise doing this in the real world, but it works like a dream!!

Hopefully see you on the 2nd.

I watched this from start to finish tonight
Although I don't have time for an in depth review right now, there a few points I'd like to make:
Firstly it is all pure worker material!
By that I mean most of the effects are: minimum/no reset, FASDIU, examinable, no gaffs and very commercial !!!
Ok, you have bought this DVD, so please watch every chapter, every minute.
You may see an effect that might not quiet work for you? But don't flick through it, nor the explanations!
GUARANTEED there will be dome snippets of information that you will overlookat your peril.
There is so much on the DVD
1 I don't know which to work first!!
2 what the he'll do these lads have for us next?!?!?!
My favourite moment on the disc though, had to be:
When Gary shakes the fella's hand after the easy coins through table.
I'm sure he was smiling inside when he did it, and god. It made me smile!!
PURE QUALITY !

Again guys,

The feedback has been amazing on here and the other forums.

Thank you so so much. We put alot into this release and we are so pleased that everyone is enjoying it so much.

Some of these routines we have been doing for a long time so it's great to think that many people we get the same reactions and use from them as we do.

Thanks again for picking up the DVD and all the kind words.

Lee.

In Bobo there is a coin vanish using a wand and a dollar coin, I showed this to my mentor at the time Ron Heaver and caught him badly (this was in 1981). He later showed me a coins across he came up with using this method, it was then when I said to him, "but what if we use another coin ;-).

It was born, the easiest coins through table ever. I've been using this at lectures and magic clubs ever since, ironically it's in my lecture notes but it seems that many missed this gem lol!!

Worked all Sunday on how I would do eyefone 10, I do like Cameron Francis take on it with Double Revelation. Got my labels this morning, so I am ready to go with it. As for No Palm Coins Through Table when Gary explained how to do it I was still laughing long after I stop watching the D.V.D. my wife now never asks how did you do that? but she just had to know how I got the four coins through the table. As TheStoner said it is completely brilliant
Thanks Gary & Lee

Thank you Stuart.

I carry the coins in a small pop open purse with the #### on the outside, just reach into your pocket, do what you need and away you go. You have ample misdirection to do the 2 second set-up, alternatively you can do it all while your hands are in your pocket, thus no misdirection or cover is needed!! Try it with very small coins, for some bizarre reason it goes down brilliantly, or, if doing it for children small coloured counters work very well.

As for Eyefone 10, I just print straight onto ordinary paper, cut them out and Pritt Stick them onto old playing cards, I can make loads up in minutes so I always have a large amount ready to go! Yes Cameron's routine on the DVD is a cracker, I also love Iain Moran's handling, simple to do but so deceptive.

All the best,

Gary Jones.
