Quick thought: a flourish can leave the impression that a self-working trick is done by means of some impossible sleight. This to me is the best use for it.

That statement is correct. It is what I mean by intelligent use of flourishes. I have often thought that it is very good psychology to do a spectacular flourish and then do a self working trick. The Piano Card trick would be a good choice here as the premise used here can be that you are doing a very difficult move and you wonder out loud if the audience can catch it.

I have never felt the need to use them yet (or learn them), but people still groove on my card tricks. I think in most cases with the stuff I do they would most likely take away some of the magic yes, I know what your friend means. 'Find their place' if you want to show them off, and totally why not! If you can do it and you wanna, bring it on!

If it were me I'd think the time would be a little after I'd done all my killer tricks and just wanted to show off a bit :D

First off this is Julianna Chen who is pretty much in a class by herself. Secondly this is a manipulation act and you really cannot compare the flourishes in a manip act to one of a close up card tricks. It can be easily argued that manipulation acts are not all that magical in a magic sense, almost all come off as a display of skill. Yes there is that "how is that done' aspect. But then a good juggler or yo-yo person or a dancer can often fall into that 'how is that done" catagory but it doesn't make the performer a magican so to speak.

Just to keep the record straight, Julianna Chen happens to be an excellent Magicianne. We go way back and the very first time she showed me a trick I sat for a moment in stunned silence, first it was such a graceful presentation and then I realized she fooled the heck out of me.

This made me think how it's absolutely true haha, I'd forgotten about that angle :D ... It's not flourishes but it started with cards...

I was at a dinner party and doing some card 'sleight of hand' tricks at the corner of the table to a few folk whilst everyone else bantered away. I had to leave early but everyone at the table was aware I was doing some tricks tho they were'nt all watching, so when I got up to go someone said "hey show everyone a trick before you go!".

So, I got out my 'special' coins and proceeded to do a trick called 'Metal Sheep'. Everyone was impressed and off I went.

My girl stayed on at the party and later told me that after I'd gone naturally the discussion around the table was magic for a bit and someone was telling of how their uncle used to do tricks when they were small and he had some special coins that were double heads or something....But...nobody even thought to question what I'd just done and all assumed it was some very clever sleight of hand cunning moves :D Brilliant.

So yep, take from that what you will.

I first met her in Montreal where she became friends with the family, (my father ownes a magic shop in Montreal). When I moved to British Columbia, Julianna who had been living there for some time helped my wife and I furnish our appartment. We knew three people when my wife and I moved out there, , Shawn Farquhar, Julianna chen and my Uncle. I know I am name dropping but I don't get to do that often.
