Ok - I know some of you are all Derren'd up - but they just started screening his shows in South Africa. I can now finally see what all of you are on about. The guy is truly a master. I love it. It's such a nice feeling to be shocked and surprised and to not have a clue as to how something is done. Can I join the Derren club now??

I would like to know how he pulled off the Russian Roulette effect, that was xtreme.

Consider yourself in! IMHO Derren is more than just amazing - he Entertains (with a capital E) and that's something quite rare these days. It might be an idea to e-mail him and ask when his stage show will be performed in SA - it might give him a big hint!

hmm - not a bad idea I'm going to to that.

yeah i loved the show where he asked a bloke (gadgie, geezer haha whatever lol) to just be spontaneous and divide a stack of photos into 2 piles. 1 for photos he felt a warm connection to and the other he felt no connection 2. and derren turned over the pile the guy had discarded. and every1 of them were photos of dead people. is this possible?? lol. i was stunned.

It's a variation of the old effect 'Out Of This World' or 'Colour Separation'. This was the one which fooled Churchill during WWII and there are one or two previous threads on TalkMagic about it and the creator, Paul Curry. Another example of taking a tried and tested idea and making it look totally different by using photos rather than playing cards.

At the end of this Derren compliments the undertaker who who dealing the cards into the two piles on his intuition. He says "that was ... out of this world". As in fact it was.

Well I spent 7 Years working with firearms and I have no idea, and all magic tricks seem ovious and easy when you know how they are done

Whilst I like Derren and his magic I thought this was very poor and not good television.

If you have spent 7 years working on firearms then you should be able to work this effect out.

Other may disagree but in todays climate where guns are prevelent to do a stunt like this was wrong.

I am going to get upon my high horse here.

I have seen too much death and injury caused by firearms and believe that we as performers should not glamourise then by doing magic with them.

I said working with firearms and weapons, not on them, i.e they were the tools of my trade.( never used a revolver, I used Browning 9mm among others) maybe I am not a guru or spotter like you, that found this so easy to work out. What did you do in the weapons field then?
Derren did not glamorise firearms in any way in this stunt/trick so I can't see why you think it's wrong. If some idiot wants to try this at home, they are a fool. One of the most famous tricks is the bullet catch and this is not glamorising guns either, should that be banned?
I dont know why people get so anti when something involves a gun, its a trick nothing else. There will always be nutters out there who will cause harm to people, weather thats with guns , bombs etc..
There is always someone that wants to bring politics to something, take a chill pill dude.

I was an Artificer Weapons in the Army for 22 years repairing any weapon from an air pistol up to a 155mm howitzer with tactical nuclear capability.

Whilst weapons are fine in military hands, I can see no reason for the public to have them, and the more they are seen on TV and in shows it therefore becomes more acceptable, which is wrong.

Guns are not toys and should not be treated as such - they are designed for two things to main and kill.

“Maim” is important in a military environment as maiming ones enemy will tie up their resources.

During my military career as well as having to inform next of kin about weapon related deaths/injuries, I have investigated many weapon accidents and 99% of the time the error was not mechanical.

Whilst what Derren did was good TV, it was wrong and glamorises once again guns.

I have lost friends and had friends injured by guns. I myself was injured by a bullet in Northern Ireland.

So NO I will never chill about guns. There are many many far better effects to do than what Derren did.

Fair one you are intilted to your opinion, I however still think it was a good trick and not glamorising guns.
My view if some one goes out and starts wasting Joe public after seeing guns on TV, then there is something mentally unstable about the bloke in the first place, ie a Walter Mitty who would do something like this regardless.
A car is a more dangerous weapon than a Gun and there are more deaths by idiots in cars than gun related deaths.
It is better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it.( not that I carry a gun!)
And another good saying, seens as you have been across the water " better to be judged by 12, than carried by 6".
