Mind Fluff by Rebecca Harris

The Effect
Mind Fluff is the newest collection of mental effects from the notebooks (and mind!) of Rebecca Harris

Cost
£19.99 from www.lulu.com

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Varies, but there's nothing of a finger flinging nature here, but good presentational skills are needed.

Review
Everyone on TM shoud know Rebecca, otherwise known as Lady of Mystery and this latest collection is chock full of superb routines.
The thing that strikes you the most is the originality of the material here.
There is not another variation of an ACR (thankfully!) but a wide ranging area of topics that are truly original.
For starters, there's an excellent book-test style routine using the Where's Wally? books which can play well for both an adult or child audience alike. There has been a lot of queries regarding mental effects for kids, well - look no further!
Another brilliant piece that stood out was Rebecca's Jack The Ripper routine, a wonderful excursion into bizarre territory. Amongst the other delights the book contains is a routine using Revels and, amazingly, a nice piece that mixes mentalism with balloon modelling!

Yes, you have gathered by now, that Rebecca has a unique way of thinking and not only is the material in this book unique, it is highly commercial too and will appeal to the public far more than a deck of cards can as objects and subjects that have a human interest are used.

The book is very well written with every aspect of each routine covered and there are loads of excellent photo and illustrations. A unique, fun and exceptional piece of work!

Overall
I can't really find any fault with this book.
10/10

I fully agree with Freddie's thouhgts, there's a lot of very workable material in this book, there's a bit of DIY work for some which helps make the routines very individual and, of course, there's the usual rather mouthwatering recipe at the end - bargain!

Thanks guys, I'm really pleased that you like it. The thing I'm loving about it is that everyone seems to have a different favourite effect from it. :D

I've just finished reading this and am very impressed with it, easily Becky's best book yet. The book contains 10 fully fledged routines, and yes they are full routines and not just simple effects.

Where? This is an effect that I originally shared with Becky about a year ago and she's taken my simple idea and really run with it. It's a fun and very book test which uses Where's Wally? books.

A-Z Memorised - A memory routine using two A-Zs. The spectator chooses any location from the book's index and the performer is able to recall it's page number and grid reference from memory. Next a landmark on one of the maps is chosen with the performer recalling it's grid reference. Lastly to finish, a map is chosen from the book and the performer is able to draw the chosen map from memory. This has got to be one of my favouite routines in the book, the methods are very clever indeed but simple of perform.

The Amazing Mind Machine - Well, only Becky could manage to mix mentalism and balloon modelling and get away with it. The spec is asked to think of an animal and from an 'amazing mind machine' is produced the very animal that was thought of. Another very clever method which also contains a few outs incase things don't quite go how you planed. In my opinion the finish using the outs is probably stronger than if everything was to go smoothly.

Marital Bliss - This is a full, mulitphase routine and a very good one too. A couple is used and a number of experiments are carried into synchronicity between the two. A brilliant routine where all the magic is done by the spectators and finishes with a brilliant anniversary prediction.

Picture of the Ripper - Another, quite eerie routine where a spectator is sent back in time and witnesses a Ripper murder. Their account of the murder matches that of a police report from the time.

Smashed - This a russian roulette routine which uses a spectator's ring. Not one of my favourites in the book but a nice routine none the less.

The Adventures of Captain Underpants - This is a brilliant routine that will get laughs from your audience. A number of members of the audience are chosen to take part in a film. They are each told to think of an actor who would play their chosen role on the big screen while they themselves act out a short playlet. After the skit has finished, the performer reveals the actor that each of them are thinking of. The routine finishes with a suprise ending that's bound to have your audience on their feet. Love this routine, the methods are clever but simple, I really can't wait to try it out on an audience.

Black on Black Q&A - As you can guess, this is a Q&A routine. It's a very nice routine that mixes together a couple of classic methods and one or two very nice pieces of thinking into a coherent routine. For me, one of the highlights of the book is Becky's 'Blue Reading' method which she explains here. Brilliant thinking that I can see having many uses and probably worth the price of the book alone.

Revels Roulette - Another nice idea that demonstrates the power of positive thinking and a game of Russian roulette using a bag of revels.

Mentalopoly - This is a very nice routine where by a spectator has free choice of any property on the monopoly board. The performer is able to predict in quite an interesting way, the property that was chosen. As with all the routines in this book, Mentalopoly mixes a couple of clever but simple methods to produce a very entertaining piece of mentalism.

And of course, Becky finishes the book with a mouth watering recipe.

This is a very good book with looks at metalism from a much lighter hearted angle than we usually see. 10 out of 10

"It's the property of a lady", as James Bond would say...
After being away from mentalism for several years, this was actually the first thing I bought.

And a real winner it is too. There's some great thinking within these pages and an original approach to presentational framework which is refreshing.
