Darrel, my apologies - I just now realized what you meant...

Look at the way he holds the hank. He doesn't try to make it stand on end for the entire length of the hank. In fact, he's holding it just under the half way point. Try making your hank stand if you're holding it at half mast. You'll find that to be much, much easier!

A bit of starch does help for this, though.

Mike.

Thanks for the advice Mike.

I had been holding the handkerchief just over 3/4 of the way down, so that may explain it.

So far, the only time I have had to practise is at work, with shirts that have large pockets with flaps and buttons on. There isn't much space to try to avoid a pocket. I think this is why it is catching but am off this weekend so will try with different shirts or T shirt.

I had been holding the handkercheif about 3'4 of the way down, so will try neare 1/2 way. I must admit I am not so worried if I cut this part out anyway.

For information.

My parents are in their 70's. They pointed out that it was either their parents, or quite possibly grandparents, that used to show them a version of the Magic Mouse with a handkerchief.

As in so many arguments, people forget that routines are evolved and changed by people, into their own routines. Unless Quentin performed the EXACT routine that you did Mark, I don't see how you could claim that somebpdy has stolen this from you. It has been around for at least 100 years. Cards have been around for much longer, yet there are many versions of a basic pick a card and find it, effect.

Yes. He does the EXACT routine I showed him. As I have already stated I didn't invent the phases. I merely invented the sequence. If I had invented the actual phases I would be making more of a fuss.

I invented the ROUTINE not the various tricks. If you had read what I said properly I mentioned that I got most of it from the Martin Gardner book.

And on reflection he didn't steal it from me. I gave it to him. I am not complaining about it. I merely remarking upon it.

Just so we're clear here - is "five minutes with a pocket hankerchief" a magic effect in the literal sense of the word, or mor euphamistic?

it was a good routine when I bought it from Ken Brooke for half a crown.
Yes yes I know that was predecimal so probably doesn't count.

I got it from the Martin Gardner book. The most famous pre-decimal performer with it was Tom Harris.

It is my routine

Postby Hemphandle » Fri Sep 05, 2008 6:18 pm

I invented it... and told Martin at the Jockey Club. He still owes me a packet of biscuits.

So that ends it.

Can someone buy me a hat!
Everything you can make with Lego I will make with Duplo - which is going to be bigger and therefore much bettter than yours.

Going back to the original intent of this thread:

Anyone looking for an excellent bit that you can include in your children's show or restaurant walk around routines, I highly recommend this DVD. Personally, I find Reynolds' presentation to be much more infantile than I can stomach, but getting past his presentation, the psychology and bits of business included in this excellent DVD more than make up for that.

I highly recommend this DVD.

Locked. And, having spent far too much time removing the dross, it's staying that way.
