Erdnase Change

Postby sleightlycrazy » Jun 29th, '11, 09:10

I remember someone posted themselves doing the Erdnase color change very quickly during a routine and people were discussing various subtleties for the move, but I can't find it...

My 2 cents: by pushing the card forward a minimal amount (I go just about a centimeter) and using a deep grip, the movement of the card can be made almost invisible. My pinky and ring fingers are forced a little further back than what feels comfortable and my index and middle fingers have more room to move with the card naturally. With this grip, my index and middle fingers can follow the corner of the card as it gets pushed forward and back, eliminating the usually blatant discrepancy in the distance between the index and middle fingers during the change.

Nice.

Oz Pearlman gives a good tip in Born To Perform - use the pinky to push the card forwards as you rotate the hand to cover the cards. Gets rid of the whole forward then back motion.

Nice technique there :) My own technique is printed up in the restricted area in the Techniques section :)

Seeing as were on the subject of this great change I'll mention some of my thoughts on the get ready.
The reason (in my opinion) the get ready is so visible nowadays is because people rarely learn the move from the original Erdnase book anymore, instead it is learned from more modern sources. The thing is though, many of these miss out an important part of the original explaination - that of the cover for the get ready. The pushing forward at the start was never meant to be seen, and certainly not so blatant as is commonly used today. In the original description the hands started low, and in the act of bringing the hands up and displaying the face card the first part of the move was done - a classic case of the larger movement covering the smaller one.
When this part of the move is taken out it then leaves the pushing forward visible. This means a slight change in technique is required. Whats odd though is that many seem to overlook this fact and seem content to just blatently push the card forward.

Jim, that was the one.

Despite being a patron of these forums for over half a decade, I'm still out chillin' with everyone on the open forums so I missed your thoughts.

I agree that the more secret the push the better. I saw a video of (I believe) Justin Miller doing the move, but he blatantly pushed the card forward than had it change while in that position with a wave of his hand. It actually looked pretty nice, but it's enough of a deviation that I don't know if it should be called the Erdnase change.

Yep, that was me :) I'm still checking in to the forum from time to time. I got to the point where I needed to put in serious practice hours before I could progress any further with my magic, so it's taken a bit of a backburner. I'll definitely come back to it before long though.

Yeah Born to Perform has a lot of excellent advice on technique in it, it's really worth getting.

The reason the push forward is so visible nowdays, is partially because Ellusionist taught this for free when you signed up as a member to their forums way back when. And Brad Christian teaches the worst Erdnase you have ever seen. He actually told them to push the card forward like that.
