Scripting Magic by Pete McCabe

Postby magicmind » Aug 23rd, '11, 21:42

I recently received this book. I passed this one up for another publication when it came out. I am 60 pages into this and can say. This has some of the best little effects that I had long forgotten. Not only that, but has a great scripting to go along with it. The book clearly shows one how to make a small effect into more of a wonderful presentation through scripting.
The book includes scripts for "Coins Across," "T and R Card," "Gypsy Thread," "Triumph," "Gemini Twins," "Hot Rod," "Svengali Deck," "Chop Cup," "$100 Bill Switch," "Out of this World," "Ace Assembly" and so much more. A majority of the effects have more than one script so you can compare the approach of two or more magicians which makes this a winner on my shelf.

I highly recommend this.

What's nice is that you may be thinking, hot rod? gemini twins? svengali deck? I don't do those simple tricks... but when you've read the scripts in here, it just proves that there are no bad tricks, you can make an interesting presentation out of anything. The hot rod one is especially good.

I found most, if not all, of the "scripts" quite uninspiring but even if they weren't you shouldn't use them. It is a fatal mistake to use patter "as is" from books. It may sound very good as the writer uses it and not so good as you use it yourself. Make your own patter up (I refuse to use that dreadful word "script") and it will sound more natural. Don't talk too fast and don't talk too slow. Don't talk too much and don't talk too little. And make your talk entertaining. That is all you have to do.

The book doesn't suggest for a second to steal the scripts in the book. It's trying to teach you how and why you should script your magic.

This is an astoundingly good book and I'd recommend it to anyone.

If the author isn't suggesting that you don't steal the "scripts" what the hell are they there for? I would have thought it an awful waste of space just to "teach you how and why you should script your magic". That can be explained in a few paragraphs rather than take up a whole book. Most of those scripts are bloody awful anyway and set a bad example. McCabe sent me a free copy to review and maybe I will one day. I shall try and ignore the "scripts" and see if the tricks and more importantly the theories are any good. They probably aren't but I shall try and put my venomous bias aside and render my verdict when I am in a good mood which happens for half an hour or so every few weeks.

This is one of the finest reads in magic and stresses the importance of scripting one's routines before unleashing on an unsuspecting audience.

If only some of the so-called top acts would have a look inside. It would stop, overnight, the irritating and continuous repetition of, "go ahead and...."; "...yeah?"; "and if I do this..." - Not to mention the tedious and unfunny jokes that some seem to think as new material.

Those that recognise themselves in the above should have a listen to themselves and have a read. It is right up there with all the other theory tomes that are highly regarded!
