Option to restrict access to your threads...

Postby MiKo » Nov 22nd, '11, 14:51

I'll try to make myself clear with an example.

Imagine I had read Tomo's books (as I actually have) and would like to discuss something contained in there given my quite peculiar background (this time I am making it up: I still haven't pondered enough about the books). As far as I know, at the moment, I have only two options:

1)I can PM Tomo, but this would severely restrict the discussion cutting away other people who could be interested.
2)I can wait until I escalate privileges in the forum and get access to the "very restricted areas", but of course this could easily take years and not happen at all.

So I am thinking that if could write a post in the common section of the forum, but restrict the access to the post to the people of the Naked Mentalism area (and myself, of course :) ) this could be a pretty nice and useful addition.
There could also be a dedicated subforum in the general are dedicated to restricted threads...

User controlled thread permissions are not likely with this forum software, unfortuantely. It's not a feature of any forum software that I know of.

I guess the forum is restricted for a reason and allowing people to create their own private forums on the topic undermines that reason.

Of course it is, and I totally understand why. But I am not convinced that the option I am proposing would really undermines that reason, although I could be wrong of course. I still think that the benefits could be greater than the problems.

Provided it is technically possible, of course.

In the case of Naked Mentalism there is already a sepaprate section dedicated to Tomo's work. Access to the Restricted Areas doesn't automatically give access to the Naked Mentalism section, only Tomo can arrange that and once he checks and gives us the OK we open the door.

I know, I used it just as an example because (as far as I can read from the rules) it requires access to the Mentalism area, and thus it is, someway, the most restricted area of the forum.

I want to be clear: I don't have in mind any particular restricted thread I could post, I just had this idea and wanted to share it :)

The Naked Mentsalism section is a stand alone area and the only requirement for access is via Tomo himself, being in the other areas isn't a requirement.

Oh, good to know; I was misdirected by the description:

"This strictly invitation only forum is for the discussion of method-free or 'Naked' mentalism techniques. Access is granted to accredited members who own Jon Thompson's (aka Tomo) 'Naked Mentalism' book, make quality contributions in the main Mentalists Only area and who display a working understanding of method-free mentalism. I see your point, those words may need to be rewritten at some point! As NM is specifically aimed at Mentalists it's expect that those who buy the books will already have such accesses but, from a purely technical point of view, it's a separate area not influenced or affected by other accesses.

This is news to me. I too was confused by the description of the forum saying I had to be in the mentalists area first. Now to send tomo a nice pm...
