"Hypnotism" resources

Postby magicbob123 » Jan 1st, '12, 21:13

Hi all!!! Just wondered what books and such you guys would rate for someone beggining in "hypnotism". I have already been suggested Reality is plastic and was hoping to get some advice on support reading that I could check out to further my understanding and also where I could purchase such material. Thanks in advance!!!

I have Ormond McGills Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnotism & paid considerably more than the £25.52p that discount magic are asking for it.

It is an excellent book & certainly worth getting into your collection, especially at that price.

I highly recommend the Ormond Mc'Gill book and I should ignore all the negative remarks about it. It truly is the best work on the subject. You have to read it intelligently and sort the wheat from the chaff since there is so much information. People criticise it for being old fashioned and dated. I don't find it so and I use a terrific amount of material from it. It is where I got my education in these matters.

Ormond McGill's book is essential for any working stage hypnotist - and I find it very useful as a hypnotherapist too. It's a steal at that price. However, I'm not sure that it's best for a beginner - there's so much in there that you may find it difficult, as Mark says, to know where to start. I think Reality is Plastic would be a better bet to begin with.

Let me just sound one note of caution here. I'm very, very nervous of performing stage hypnotism - not because I can't do it, and not really on account of upsetting my professional body - but because I wouldn't want to fall foul of the Hypnotism Act 1952 and even more importantly because my professional insurance wouldn't cover it. I understand that stage hypnotism insurance is now available but extremely expensive. And I wouldn't want to be without it.

I've just got Ormond McGills encyclopaedia with my Christmas Amazon vouchers for kindle. I'm finding it an excellent read. I couldn't comment on how hard a newcomer would find it, but it certainly is encyclopaedic in scope. Mark's book is good value for money for a shorter read if you have a kindle or compatible reader.

Its not a personal licence, and I think the licence is free. They are issued by a local authority to cover a specific show in a theatre or public place such as a public house.
The local authority requires evidence of your public liability insurance which must specifically cover 'hypnosis'
Most Insurance companies will only issue the insurance if you can demonstrate that you have experience and professional training.

So basically you need to be good at it before you can be legal.

For the same reasons, I only do non-trance hypnosis in pubs and restaurants.
The 1952 hypnosis act is very much centred around the word 'trance'.

I use close up magic to get a feeling for their susceptability then I do a non-trance hand stick leading to non-trance name amnesia. It is just an application of persuasion techniques and NLP, building on their susceptability. But they are never under a trance.

http://www.hypnosiswithouttrance.com has several ebooks, DVDs and training courses.

Ive just read through and article on the matter and noticed the frequency of the references to them specifically reffering to "trance" hypnosis so ill have to be careful to keep my audience awake

Keeping an audience awake.... wow, that's a whole new concept in entertainment.
