Hello everyone

Hi guys,

My name is Liam, I'm 20 years old and just getting into magic.

The first book I bought was Hugard's royal road to magic, which was recommened to me. I have had Hugard's book for a little over a month and I have learn't quite a bit from it in the short time I have had it, and spent many a night up until the eary hours reading and practising from it.

The one thing I will say with Hugards book, and this is my only critiscim, is that it's not always the clearest in regards to sleights and some of the more complicated movements for the beginner such as myself. I think maybe it has to do with the old fashioned writing style, which at the time would have been clearer, but today, it's not nearly as clear as it once was.

For this reason, at the moment, I have been learning and studying more of the self-performing feats from the book and practising flourishes, glimpses, etc. Stuff that doesn't require any sleight of hand or complex manipulation.

Today I have just ordered card college light, lighter & lightest by Roberto Giobbi. The reviews read very well and I was told that the card college light range would help with easier & self-performing tricks (but supposedly still retain a wow factor if executed correctly) while I continue to learn and grasp the basic sleights. That's what I'm really working on at the minute

I was wondering if anyone knew if the card college volume 1 explanation of how to execute sleights and force's is better explained and illustrated for the novice such as myself? Would that be a good book to get, card college 1?

If so, I think I might purchase it.

Any feedback and advice would be much appreciated.

I look forward, in the coming weeks and months, to participating in the forum.

Hi Liam,

Welcome to TM and to the wonderful world of magic! You will find that the illustrations and explanation in Card College are easier to understand I would have thought. Royal Road is brilliant but does have its limitations. The material in Light/Lighter/Lightest should certainly give you plenty to get on with and to develop performing confidence, but there will be no substitute for the careful study/practise you already sound to be giving it. Good luck, and let us know how you get on.

Phil

Thanks for the welcome and advice, guys.

Phil, I most certainly will let you know how I get on. I have just placed an order for card college 1 on Alakazam magic, so hopefully it should be here in a few days.
