Complete Card Magic

Postby AA 14 » Feb 12th, '12, 21:45

This set of DVDs were my first steps into card magic. Made by MagicMakers and performed and explained by Gerry Griffin.

This is my first review so hope its ok!

This was a set of 7 DVDs, I believe it is now condensed into 4 DVDs.

The Effect
Card tricks to take you from beginner right through to expert extreme.
Volumes 1-5 teach an incredible 62 tricks while vol 6 teaches techniques including forces, shuffles and a few flourishes while vol 7 teaches cuts and some very valuable sleights including DL, TL, Elmsley Count and various others.

Cost
You will need to shop around but I know Alakazam have the 7 DVD set for £75.

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Because of the variety of tricks the difficulty varies. On vol 1 the beginner tricks I would rate a 1but on the later volumes maybe 3-4.
BUT all the sleights used are then taught on vol 6 and 7.

Review
62 Card Tricks - ok, on vol 1 several of the tricks use the same principal ie PULSE,CRUNCH, EYES ARE THE WINDOW TO THE SOUL but there are some lovely tricks too such as COWBOYS AND INDIANS where 3 sets of cards are mixed and cut but reappear together at the finish,
LIE DETECTOR where a spectator can lie about the card he chose but you'll still find it and INTO THE FUTURE where you predict two cards that the spectator will deal.

Many of the tricks on this set are true classics, although some have been given different names to the original effect. On this set you will find
DO AS I DO
FURTHER THAN THAT
CARD WARP
TRIUMPH
CHICAGO OPENER
OIL AND WATER
AMBITIOUS ACE THRU FIVE { which I think is Ambitious Classic}
USE YOUR POWERS FOR GOOD {Out Of This World}
AMBITIOUS CARD
TWISTING THE ACES

and many others that may well have alternative titles.
There are also Poker Tricks - BACK TO BASICS POKER
Dealer Tricks - GAMBLERS THUMBS
Colour Changing Decks - COLOUR CHANGING DECK !

and many others.

Overall
10/10
Each trick is explained in full by Gerry Griffin. Some people find him boring to listen to but he explains everything clearly enough for a beginner to follow.
Sure, you will find more stunning tricks elsewhere but there is more than enough here to get you started and Gerrys presentation of his tricks is very smooth.
Yes, the set is expensive but I guess thats the price of learning! Don't forget, the sleights and forces you will learn are common to MANY tricks
so once learnt you have them at your disposal forever.
For me, a GREAT place for a beginner to start their Card Magic journey! :D

Got to agree with you, I have the 4 disc set of this and although Gerry is a bit fuddy-duddy (a nice change from the T11 and Ellusionist street magic gang in my opinion) and a lot of the first disc is quite bad, there's soooooooo many tricks, and some are really good. The amount you get for the price is top notch, and there's really nothing that difficult (ACR is listed under Expert extreme to give you an idea). I would and do recommend this to people !

Edit: just saw the bit about price, I got this for just over £20 from Amazon, and it's still there now ;)

Yes, it's a great starting point in card magic, helped me along the way a lot.
Well worth the money.

Hi Jester
There is plenty on this set to keep you busy for a while, mate.
Have read your intro, there are a few tricks on here that are so easy I doubt you would mess them up. Others obviously will need practice.

Have you tried any self working tricks? Maybe they would help you as regards your confidence?

Cheers
Andy

I'm not good with cards at all and there never going to be my main area but as the set is now just £26 on amazon I decided to grab one.

I do know a few self working tricks and I love them, one of my favourites got a really good reaction last night to three professional magicians at my local magic society. I had ordered a self working tricks book only the other day as well. It's on :)

Anyone know how this compares to the Royal Road to Card Magic DVD?

Are you watching closely? Then I'll begin...

If you mean the R Paul Wilson Royal road DVDs, then the RRTCM ones have more in depth teaching of things, but this one has a greater number of moves and a far greater number of tricks (a lot of which are better as well). Royal road is probably better if you're just starting, this one is better if you know a few bits and want to pick up a few new moves and some good tricks. Unless you're a beginner, I recommend this one a lot.

Ive had this for about a week now and have just finished disc one, So far its simply everything i could of hoped for. except some out dated jokes!

Out of the first disc alone i've re-planed my audition for my local magic club, and have impressed my family with the tricks ive picked to do, Some of them I will never do, but its still nice to see how they work even.

Ive managed to keep up with everything so far and really looking forward to the next disc, once ive practised this one again a few times.
