Any advice on that would be great, I have a stripper deck but don't get on with it very well

use it as your regular deck just with a built in jog function, have card selected....... rotate pack and shuffle........ have it returned and reshuffle, cut to top or bottom as required, you can then do any routine you wish safe in the knowledge that you know were there card is, you can even have a sneeky peek if you like.

because at any stage i genuinely don't know what card they have selected theres no problem acting inocent so no nerves, plus you have the bonus if you want to force a card from a freely shuffled deck, you can ask them if they would like you to cut to a card or have them take the next card simply by changing the position of the cut, above or below it, realy makes the spec feel like they had a free choice.

just knowing you have a backup trick should you loose your way is a boost in itself even if you don't use it, think about it, you could have a card selected from a face up deck, returned and shuffled yet still be able to do the hauntd card rise straight away making you in the specs eyes a card god.

in short don't pass over the self working tricks or the ones were the trick is done before you even start, like cut n restored rope, they will give you the confidence to sell the trick in compleatly safety and then go on to something that requires some skill with your audience already primed that your good. :D

remember an audience member won't feel any less of you if you reveal there chosen card in your wallet via a force than if you palmed it, mercury folded it and loaded it into an envelope inside your wallet, the outcome is the same too them ie magic. :)

Yeah, I have a neat trick that starts with a "random" prediction..I messed it up by over dressing it, trying to make it with out seeing the cards faces, Next time I will do it very differently.

I do own the Royal road book..but I cant get on with it, I can't even follow there instructions for the first trick, So I'm going to invest in a DVD.. Can I get advise on with one you guys would suggest ?

A) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Royal-Road-Card ... k_h_b_cs_1" target="_blank

B) http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Card-M ... 502&sr=8-5" target="_blank

Should I post this in a different part of the forum? I'm not 100% sure of the rules.

You have been sorely afflicted and yet you start with one great advantage; a desire to improve your situation. You will find there are a lot of people out there who think they are God's gift to the human race. Why should they work to improve? And so they remain ignorant. Your first step was to ask for help. You've come to the right place. You feel you are clumsy. What a horrible word! It's just easier for some than it is for others. There is only one way for any of us to become dexterous and that is to practice. You know that you are just going to have to practice more than most people. Practice the move you find difficult and you will find your hands develop the skill you want without conscious thought. You drive a car. That is beyond the ability of many people. Remember what it was like the first time you sat in the driver's seat? You had to think about every move. Now your hands and feet do what you want them to do without you having to think it through beforehand and the car goes safely where you want to go.
Sleights are exactly the same. Your hands must perform the sleight without thinking about it in detail. Just as in the car; your eyes are looking twenty to a hundred yards ahead; or in the mirror to see behind; or you are glancing sideways while your hands and feet are automatically doing what you have trained them to do.
A skillful magician is not thinking what his hands are doing while he is performing. He is too busy entertaining his audience. He is probably wondering if he can spot the best person to help with his next trick! That is probably the best example of the 'one ahead principle' in action.
Just don't try to run before you can walk properly. Why not buy one of Karl Fulves "Self -Working" series of books. They are well written and an easy read. "Self-Working",by the way, does not mean you can perform the effects as soon as you have read them nor that they are second class tricks. In fact one of my favourite effects is to be found on page 42 of "Self-Working Mental Magic". Good luck on your marvelous journey.

Thank you.

That's a really nice post that's really hit home.
I do know a few self working tricks and I love them, one of my favourites got a really good reaction last night to three professional magicians at my local magic society. I had ordered a self working tricks book only the other day, that and a DVD to show me what I'm trying to learn from the Royal Road book will be my purchases this month.. saying that the Travelling Deck keeps catching my eye as does any thing that catches fire, sticks in my skin or pokes out of my flesh !

If you can't fool them, freak them out? Can I base an act on that ? ;)

Take heart from people like Wayne Dobson. For many years he's been looking at existing routines, re-jigging them to remove all the finger flinging difficult stuff yet still retaining the original effect. Now virtually self working, these routines leave the performer free to focus on entertaining the specs. Which is, after all, what it’s all about. Specs don’t care how many years the performer has spent practising and how clever the moves are, all they’re interested in is what happens during the time they’re watching your performance.
