A lovely trick and looks so good and is really effective. I feel that the trick is one of the best tricks that I have, it's a must for table hopping as it is quick and simple to do. :D

Viking (USA) makes the best set I've ever seen. Brass, beautiful, sturdy and works like a dream.

Noisy Boxes

Postby flunkie_uk » Feb 28th, '05, 22:37

Hi,

I bought the Spellbinding Boxes off ebay. They are the MagicMakersInc ones. Is it just me or are they really noisy. I can't do the trick as, when you perform the secret move, they make so much noise that is obvious what I am doing. Even doing it really slowly (and I mean taking the best part of a minute over it) they are really loud. It sounds like a team of mechanics are at work in my pocket.

Is it that I have bought a really poor make, or is there some kind of knack to it. If these are no good, what make should I go for. If there is a knack, could someone please explain it to me 'cause it is driving me mad.

Cheers,

Mike. :-)

i personally keep a silk in my pocket and this dampens the sxound! also try the back pocket as it is usally tighter and makes it easier to make it look like you are looking for some thing !

Yes they are really noisy, it's this that has put me off using mine. Like you Mike I got mine from ebay & mine are called spellbound.

i personally keep a silk in my pocket and this dampens the sxound!

How do I say this...
Erm within their h****r they clank, wrapping a silk around it to my mind may dampen the sound as your moving around (would it, does it? a thin silk?) but when you do the "move" that silk is gonna have to be opened (which may cause more fumblin') & more clatterin'

Any other tips on this one?

Hi everyone.

I got these recently. Very nice. I like it. It's great for walkaround. Easy to set up. Easy to perform. The issue for me is not the noise. With care it can be closed fairly quietly and I tend to work in noisy environments like clubs, so the talking is not a problem. My only gripe is with the handkerchief. I don't really like that type of handling. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to make a Super Dooper Versatile Vanisher (MW CCM).

All the best
Gary

Hi all
Nest of boxes is currently on my wish-list - however consensus on the magic cafe forums is that the Viking brass set are far superior to the 'spellbinding' set, although it doesn't come with the gimmicked handkerchief.

I wouldn't know if they are any quieter than the load for the spellbinding set, so would be grateful if anyone can give a comparison.

Cheers

I have done it close up, sometimes people notice the noise and other times they dont. It helps to have bigger pockets aswell as it can be hard with tight ones. The gimmicked hankerchief is a pretty good fooler aswell.

edit: this is davenports version.

I bought this a while ago and love it. A great reaction every time without question. the only issue I have found with it is that the plastic holding progressively became more and more chipped and is now unuseable. I bought a cheap set of plastic boxes off ebay just to get the holder but is it slightly bigger than the original set. Now I find I cannot leave it set up and ready to go for long in my pocket as the boxes fall out of place

when I had this item I would take the boxes out and give them a shake as a convincer that thease are a nest of boxes and also to cover any noise with the nesting, regarding the noise a little bit of copydex / pva will reduce the noise to a wisper.
I would also use a pull for the vanish and a false take, placeing ring or coin in a purse on the table before getting the boxes, retrieving the ring / coin as I go, then all you have to do is touch the box on the purse and have them open both, sort of substitution trunk idea.

Hi Guys
I got a brass set that look very much like the viking set, for under £25, from paul-howard-pro-magic.co.uk

Only tried it on the girlfriend at this stage but seems decent & pretty good value at approx £15 less than the Viking set on Alakazam.

I cant actually compare it to the viking ones as I dont have any, these came in a plain box with a picture and label saying 'brass nest of boxes' (or something similar - I dont have it with me atm), but no manufacture details.

with careful handling its not too noisy, though I may consider applying a tiny amount of wax or similar to the rims (as long as they still close flush) as most of the noise is the lids and bases coming together (metal to metal) rather than the initial coin load.

I just need to work on the initial coin vanish as this trick works SO much better if the Spec thinks they still hold the coin (when the boxes are exposed) which you can do with the gimmicked hanky that comes with the spellbinding set.

Hello,
When I had one of these coin production nest of boxes decades ago when I was a youngster they had a small coin sized cloth/felt bag at the very centre that was done up with an elastic band. This means the coin won't clatter or clink when it arrives in the centre box.

I'm sure it won't be too hard for you to stitch such a small felt bag together.
If its still a bit noisy then you can always have one cloth bag inside another and then inside the boxes.

You can then shake the box as you take it out of your pocket/handbag so as to hide the noise of the you know what being removed.

Hope this helps.

I had one of those too - a set of matchboxes with a s...e. I think the cloth bag would only work with a s...e; it wouldn't work with the modern type of box which uses a different setup.
