I saw this yesterday. It has good atmosphere (presumably only if seen in the cinema) and builds tension well.

The ending......complete gash.

Better luck next time Ridders.

I think I'm going to carry on avoiding cinemas and go back to DVD's. Cheaper and I get to keep it to watch again. I watched the artist yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed. I think woman in black will be next on the view list. Missed it in the cinema and heard good things.

Iron Sky

Nazis have been hiding on the dark side of the moon ever since they got their butts kicked in WWII and have been plotting to return to Earth and overthrow the planet . Extremely silly, but some great production values and while I'm sure it's no Prometheus it doesn't fail to entertain.

Yeah Iron Sky looks good fun, the trailers have been out for an age, glad it finally got released.

Prometheus is just too full of supposedly intelligent people doing ridiculously stupid out-of-character things.
STUPID SPOILERS: "Oh no, I'm scared of dead aliens so I'll run off, but now there's a live alien, that's fine, I guess I'll play with it for a laugh, oh dear now I'm dead" and "On no I might get squashed, shame I can only run in a straight line, oh dear now I'm dead" etc etc etc.

Really? I've decided against watching it, because I heard bad things (plus, I'm a massive fan of the book and play, and I'm kind of stupid when it comes to adaptations ;))

Thinking of checking out the Chernobyl Diaries. The reviews have been c*** (not the best), but I'm a sucker for the use of interesting locations.

I've heard very mixed reviews so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I'm dubious of jane Goldman's role as screenwriter. I enjoyed the book a lot, but still think of her ghost stories as poor mans MR James. She has a good go at emulating his works, but ultimately I can get MR James for free on kindle for better quality. I'm also interested in the film as part of the relaunch of hammer horror. It won't ruin the story too much for me if its bad. Not like I am legend, which five years on I still can't talk about with several friends it made them so angry.

I saw the play before I read the book (and loved it); The Woman in Black is quite special, for me, because it was the point I finally 'got' ghost stories (had always been more of a fan of horrors based on reality). Currently working through the script for the PhD and loving it. :)

Would be fun to hear what you make of it after seeing the film!

Will post back when its out. Sounds like you've got good subject material for your PhD, something you've certainly got a love of.

woman in black as a film is quite good it uses the old adage that if a monster should be in the shadows..... keep it there and don't bring it into the glaring lights.
the movie flows well from plot to plot with few gaps and most are explained well in the preamble to the event, harry "look at my manly torso" potter plays the character very well and is belivable in that roll after the initial 'dispelliamus' moment.
there are a few logical plot twists and all in all a pleasing film with plenty of suggested terror, a tad long and some unessary ploding between plots but very wachable.

Woman in Black is good - go see. I also recommend the book.

With regard to Prometheus, here's what I wrote on Facebook:

I'm trying not to be over-critical, but Prometheus: if the big guys created us, then decided to wipe us out using the aliens but then changed their minds and decided not to, why was the big guy in such a foul mood when he was woken up? Didn't he get the email that we were okay? That poor woman had an alien cesarean and two minutes later she's running and jumping with the best of them. She should have had a cup of tea and a slice of toast first, at least. And the 3 guys who joyfully steered the Prometheus into the alien ship and died, they were pretty chirpy and quick to agree to commit suicide dontcha think? And in Alien, the big guy appeared to be in the big gun seat when his chest burst open, not on board what remained of the Prometheus. And... and... and I sat too close to the Imax screen so everyone had big faces and small foreheads.

I'll also add, there's something that you may have missed. When they first went into the dome, they carbon dated the first dead big humanoid they came across. It was 2000 years old. If the big humanoids created us, then decided to wipe us out, then changed their minds, I wonder what changed their minds? What happened 2000 years ago?? Sooooo, if Jesus was half big humanoid and half human, that means they must have had 2 plans: a) wipe us out or b) try to save us and change our ways. Personally I don't think mankind has changed for the better since the whole Jesus thing, certainly there's as many wars and as much suffering (I imagine) as pre-Christ. So perhaps the big humanoid guys should have wiped us out after all??? Anyway.

I can answer that one. Wasn't the same fella.
Prometheus was on planet LV223; Alien is on LV426. Stands to reason the bridge set up of the ships is probably standard.
